The New York Times Bestseller! "Absolutely riveting." --Alexandra Bracken, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Darkest Minds This vividly rendered novel reads like HBO's Game of Thrones . . . if it were set in the Ottoman Empire. Ambitious in scope and intimate in execution, the story's atmospheric setting is rife with political intrigue, with a deftly plotted narrative driven by fiercely passionate characters and a fearsome heroine. Fans of Victoria Aveyard's THE RED QUEEN and Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES won't want to miss this visceral, immersive, and mesmerizing novel, the first in the And I Darken series. NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets. Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who's expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he's made a true friend--and Lada wonders if she's finally found someone worthy of her passion. But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against--and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point. From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes the first book in a dark, sweeping new series in which heads will roll, bodies will be impaled . . . and hearts will be broken. "A dark and twisty fantasy . . . think Game of Thrones, but with teens."--Seventeen   "Sinister, suspenseful, and unapologetically feminist."--Buzzfeed   "Will completely spin you into another time and place."--Bustle   "Takes no prisoners, offering up brutal, emotional historical fiction."--NPR.org An ALA Rainbow List Top Ten Selection… (més)

The book took the idea of Vlad the Impaler being a girl and ran with it. The story is mainly told from this torn and conflicted girl and her handsome brother Radu.

Some of the scenes in this book could be graphic with people being killed and tortured. However, the book does not go into detail on the gore focusing instead of the love triangle of Lada, Radu, and Mehmed. Many readers really liked the fierce and rebellious Lada character. At times, Radu would steal the spotlight and I cheered for him. I was rather disappointed that Mehmed did not get more detail.

The book does run long. It took me a long time to get through it as I took week long breaks.

Aside from two clearly stolen moments from Disney's Mulan, I thought this book and its characters were unique. The worldbuilding is complex, as are the characters and their desires, motivations, and fears. I LOVE the sibling relationship between Vlada and Radu. The contrast between their individual strengths/weaknesses, and the exploration of how each either helps or hinders them and in what ways, is fascinating. There's also complexity with side characters, especially women, and how they attempt to find power. I'm excited to read the next book. ( )

This novel has a little more political intrigue than I generally have the patience for, but the interactions and developing relationships between the characters are interesting, as is the time period and geographical setting. ( )

teen fiction romantic series with action and political intrigue (fictionalized version of historical setting--Transylvania/Wallachia and Ottoman empire; warrior sister and beautiful brother both fall in love with Ottoman's young sultan). This was a different genre from what I've read of Kiersten White, and I liked it a lot. It did take a little bit of time to get into it, but seems like a worthwhile trilogy if you are looking for a new story.
Parental note: the boy-girl couple in question do some kissing but she has decided not to go any further (for that matter, the boy-boy couples also kiss but don't go any further)--at least for book 1 of this trilogy; there is one near-rape scene where the protagonist kills her attacker; the young sultan does create babies with his concubines (though the act of procreation is more implied than described). And I Darken tells the story of Vlad The Impaler, in this case, what if Vlad The Impaler was a woman?

Enter Lada Dragwlya, who, along with her younger brother, Radu, grow up overtime from children to young adults. While this story is labeled as a Fantasy, it's more so that of a Historical Fiction with almost no fantasy elements to the story. The story does take time to get into, so if slow paced books aren't your style, then this story might not be the one for you.

Some of the things I liked in this book is the characters. Lada is both brutal and vicious, but along with that comes her facing challenges as a woman, like with her wanting to be independent rather than marry. But even while she wants to be her own person, there's a distraction in the way of that, being in the form of Mehmed.

And speaking of Mehmed, there's a love triangle that is within the story, but not in the way that I expected at all. See, Lada's character towards Mehmed is quite one-sided at first, but she does eventually gain trust with him later on, despite the fact that there was a bit of betrayal from him that took place. On Lada's side of thing with Mehmed, her feelings are conflicted, seeing how Huma wants her to marry him rather than be independent and act like a man, while Lada feels the opposite. And for Radu, he also gets involved in the love triangle, seeing how his feelings towards Mehmed go from brotherly to feeling romantic towards him.

And with that, I'll briefly go over Radu. Radu is Lada's younger sibling, and he's definitely one who's overall caring but determined, and an overall sweetheart. I did enjoy the way that his sexuality was potrayed throughout the work, he has romantic feelings for Mehmed that is shown through his thoughts later on within the story. Halil Pasha was able to figure it out based on how he saw Radu after getting into a kissing session with Salil.

But, besides the romantic aspects, there's a lot of political aspects within the story as well. It really did give me Game Of Thrones vibes in regards to the politics and court intrigue that took place throughout the later half of the novel. And it got quite brutal at times too with Radu dealing with Skanderberg, Lada and the group infilitrating the capital, Lazar dying, Lada getting stabbed by Ilyas.

It's going to be quite interesting in regards to how the next book in the series goes, seeing how Radu is now in a marriage with Nazira, Bodgan's come back, Lada is going back over to Wallachia and is now becoming the ruler over there, Radu and Mehmed heading over to Constantinople, along with Radu and Lada's father, Vlad, dead.

Overall, this is a 4 star read for me, it was an excellent book with a few minor issues, but overall enjoyable and one I am about to consider being Kiersten White's best work. ( )

“On our wedding night," she said, "I will cut out your tongue and swallow it. Then both tongues that spoke our marriage vows will belong to me, and I will be wed only to myself. You will most likely choke to death on your own blood, which will be unfortunate, but I will be both husband and wife and therefore not a widow to be pitied.”
Her spine was steel. Her heart was armor. Her eyes were fire.
As the baby latched on with surprising fierceness, the nurse offered her own prayer.
Let her be strong.
Let her be sly.
And let her be ugly.
