Penhallow's record of ""memorable occurrences"" consisted largely of a ""narrative of tragical incursions perpetrated by bloody pagans, who are monsters of . . . cruelty . . . . Who are as implacable in their revenge, as they are terrible in the execution of it; and will convey it down to the third and fourth generation."" As such it remains an essential contemporary account of strife with the natives and of their eventual ""submission.""
