“The Violin Man” by Colin Thompson is certainly a unique picture book, appropriate for the ages of about 7 and above. It's an interesting and heartfelt story about an old man named Oscar, who's a violinist. Night after night he plays his violin outside a theater, while people wait for their tickets. Oscar dreams of being the best violinist in the world, and he also envisions his daughter Marietta (now deceased) as the most gifted ballerina. One day Oscar is given an opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing inside the theater. I think children will really enjoy both the creativity of the storyline, as well as the amazing computer generated illustrations. The pictures are extremely detailed and imaginative, capturing Oscar's thoughts and emotions. For instance when Oscar gets to play the violin inside the theater, there's an illustration of the outskirts of a city. Most parts of the city look like they've been formed by several large trees, as tree trunks, branches and leaves are intertwined amongst the houses and buildings. This depicts Oscar being “on the edge of greatness, with the world at his feet (Thompson). I think both the text and illustrations of “The Violin Man” would create a great deal of meaningful discussion, especially in a classroom environment. ( )
