Alan and his big scary teeth frighten all the other animals in the jungle...but without his teeth, Alan's not so scary.

Bright colors, funny story - great for storytime. Read in the Carle library. ( )

I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. At first I really enjoyed looking at all the great illustrations. Everything was so colorful and nicely done. I also enjoyed the plot of the story as it built suspense up until the tables were turned for Alan the alligator. He was trying to scare everyone in the jungle with his teeth like his family has always done. Until the readers and the animals of the jungle find out that Alan's big scary teeth are actually fake. They laugh at Alan but realize he was very hurt and was just trying to be like his family. So the animals sided with Alan and told him he could have his teeth back as long as he did not scare them anymore. I feel that the big idea of this story was that just because others do something doesn't make it right, and it's always better being nice to others than being mean. ( )

This book is about an alligator named Alan, that loves to scare all of the animals that comes his way. This book would be good with when working with younger students, this book will keep the students engaged and entertained. I think this book could be a great way to help remind the students in your class that there are a lot of ways that students can become a puzzle piece that fits in the classroom. This book could also show students that making friends is not always easy but to use their strengths to create friends not their weaknesses. ( )

Alan the alligator loves to scare the other jungle animals with his razor sharp teeth. However, one day Alan's big secret is discovered and Alan is no longer as scary as he once seemed.

The illustrations are one of the best aspects about this book. They appear to be hand drawn and slightly abstract rather than "spot on" realistic, which helps to keep the story humorous and lighthearted. The vocabulary used is slightly elevated as well as detailed and the use of onomatopoeia enhances the descriptions of the jungle animals' feelings and reactions towards Alan. The surprise ending shows young readers that stories can go in any direction and that you do not need to stick to a certain "formula" when writing. This book can be used in the classroom to teach the importance of being considerate and using your talents to help rather than harm. It can also be a lesson towards finding different ways to "fit in" and make friends. ( )

The one and only thing that Alan is good at is scaring other with his teeth, he never fails. But what will Alan do when he loses his teeth. This silly book gives a funny and new take on fitting in, in a whole new way. This book is sure to entertain young readers and it will get some giggles no doubt. ( )
