It's been a very long time since I've read a Rick Riordan book but I used to love his stuff. I went to a talk by him when I was a kid and I have several books signed by him. This was pretty good! I'm outside of the age for the target audience at this point and I only ever read the first Percy Jackson Series and his Egyptian mythology series so some of the continuity from previous series' is lost on me but I was still able to follow this story completely. I had a fun time with the characters, new and old, I this book. I thought the representation of Apollo as bisexual was really good. I'm not sure if I'll be continuing with the series, not because I didn't like it but because I have so much else on my plate right now. This was a great middle-grade book and I'm so happy Riordan is still writing great books. ( )

I always enjoy everything Rick Riordan writes and this series is no exception. I really like the story and the writing style and the only thing that stops it from being a five star read is Apollo himself who I find most aggravating. ( )

May 25th 2016: Perfection

August 16th 2021: This still holds up. I love Meg and Apollo's platonic relationship and banter. A retelling of a mortal Apollo completing harrowing trials is such an amazing concept for a book series and I love the little cameos of our favorite demigods (without them taking the spotlight off of our new main characters). I also teared up a bit at this one. Meg didn't have Medusa's head to kill off her abusive step-father like Percy did. I didn't see the signs the first time through, but the foreshadowing is definitely there if you know to look for it which is true-to-life too. You can't always spot abuse of your friends and family, especially if you're not vigilant. ( )

As a second sequel series to first [b:Percy Jackson and the Olympians|28187|The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)|Rick Riordan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1400602609s/28187.jpg|3346751] and then the [b:Heroes of Olympus|7736182|The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1)|Rick Riordan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1464201003s/7736182.jpg|10107891], we do get new main characters characters: Apollo, now in mortal form and Meg, surprisingly powerful plant magic demigod with some cool Roman swords. But we also get a number of guest appearances and references to previous characters: especially Percy Jackson himself.

It's interesting have a setting and characters we can relate to to help ground us in the new series, but on the other hand, if I wanted to read about Percy Jackson, couldn't I just read his series again? I remember having the same problem with Heroes of Olympus.

That--and I just don't care that much about Apollo. He spends the entire story whining, making references about all the cool things he's done, while at the same time not at all feeling like a thousands year old (former) immortal. I get that's entirely intentional character building, but that doesn't mean he's a great character to be around for most of the book.

Meg on the other hand, she's pretty cool. She has the same downside many of the main characters Riordan writes have--she's weirdly more powerful than she should be. It's always explain, but it would be nice to see a 'standard' demigod get the spotlight more often. She's still by far the best part of the book though.

On the other hand, the story itself is pretty cool and we get yet a bit more worldbuilding where I didn't expect there would be much left to mine. On top of that, we actually get a bit of glue starting to tie everything from the other series together, which wasn't even something I knew I wanted, but I'm really curious to see where it goes.

Overall, Percy Jackson was and still is the best of the series in my opinion, but if you're looking for something more in that world... well, you could do far worse. ( )

What Fun! I love this new series about Apollo losing his "godliness" and being made human where he has to prove to Zeus that he deserves to be made a god again. Apollo is now a 16 year old with "acne and flab" which makes him thoroughly disgusted with his makeover. Having been the god of healing, prophecy, and music, Apollo is having difficulty accepting the fact that he can't even heal his own acne let alone help others. Apollo is rescued from a mugging by a feral demi-god, Meg, and together they find Percy Jackson who helps them to get to Camp Half-blood. There, Apollo finds that several of the demi-gods are missing and the Oracles are not functioning. Apollo with Meg's help must find a way to save the missing Oracles so that prophecies are available again.

This book was a great with the characterization of Apollo being a self-centered egotistical teenager who believes that Zeus, his father, just doesn't understand him and how important he is as a god. It appears that Apollo will have to prove himself by performing some heroic deeds before his father stops punishing him.

For a lover of Percy Jackson and mythology this series looks like a winner to me! ( )
