First of all, I need to say thank you to St. Martin's Press for sending me an Advanced Reader's Copy. I think this book was already released in Europe, but is releasing this month in U.S. I could potentially be wrong about that though.

First, can I just say that the door on this cover doesn't really match with what we know about Jack and Grace in the story? Their house is perfect... this less than perfect door doesn't quite fit into the setting of this thriller.

I liked the premise of Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris and thought that for her first novel that she did a pretty good job!

The premise of not knowing who someone really is and that the person you love or think you love is someone completely different is a an original idea, at least in the way that it is portrayed in this novel. It isn't everyday that one sees a character written like that of Jack Angel. The only thing is, and maybe this is because I have never seen a character quite like Jack Angel (and I've read quite a few crime thriller books), but it seems to me that Jack is a little too perfectly evil (and if you've read this book I think that would make sense to you). People make mistakes and even if they are incredibly smart, nobody is perfect. And for that reason I did have a slight issue with the story line. Jack was a little too unbelievable as a character because of this.

While I did appreciate that the author was trying to do something a little more original by switching back and forth between past and present, I still believe that the story might have been a little bit better had it been told in chronological order I understand why she did it the way she did maybe she felt like she was building more suspense by flipping back and forth between past and present but in some ways it irritated me and I wanted to find out how things between the past and the present we're going to tie together and I think it could have been just as suspenseful if it was told incomplete chronological order.

I definitely sympathized with Grace throughout the story, but at times I wondered how she didn't see things coming. No one is that perfect if you know them well enough, and dating someone for 6 months or less and then agreeing to marry them doesn't seem like it would have the best results. Now obviously there are marriages that have started and have worked out after only dating for that little of time, but in today's day and age, when this story was set, it is slightly unreasonable that people would end up together and that everything would go well after only dating for 6 months. Grace's expectations were a little unrealistic and unfortunately was a little too trusting (at least the beginning) for me. Thankfully there was a more intelligent female character to make up for what Grace lacked (Esther).

Overall, this story kept me at the edge of my seat and created wonderful characters that you either totally hated or completely sympathized with. ( )

Yes I had a few hang ups with minor things. I wouldn't say the ending was too original and the female characters could have easily become annoying and too dumb (except Millie).

Overall, I really did enjoy the way things pulled together. And I believe Jack got what he deserved for the dog alone. ( )

Grace marries the perfect man, Jack Angel, who turns out to be a completely different person.

There was very little nuance in how Jack and Grace Angel (or any of the characters for that matter) were portrayed. The character of Jack Angel is perfect to the point of ridiculousness. His motivation which is key to the plot was unclear. And, I had very little sympathy for Grace Angel; she simply grated on my nerves. They were also surrounded by a bunch of clueless friends and family (with one exception) who did not pick up one single signs that things were not as they appeared between Jack and Grace. This went on for over fifteen months.

The plot was predictable; I guessed fairly early how it was going to end. Jumping back and forth between past and present was ineffective and unnecessary. But there was at least some tension in waiting to see how everything turned out which is what redeemed the book a little bit. ( )

Grace is swept off her feet by Jack's charm, and after a whirlwind romance, they marry and move into a beautiful house. They are the envy of all their friends and neighbors, and seem to live the perfect life. Jack is a successful lawyer and Grace dotes on him as his adoring wife. But it's obvious within the first chapter or two that things aren't as they seem on the surface.

This was a good thriller, somewhat creepy, with a character you can't help but hate. Lots of manipulation throughout, and though there are some aspects that are a bit farfetched, this one kept me gripped and wanting to know what would happen next. Can't go into a lot of detail without giving away the plot, but it's a good one! Recommend! ( )
