Jack is a sailor and the son of a disowned peer, yet his grandfather names his successor. Jack would love to walk away from the title and life of the gentry, but he decides to sacrifice his immediate desires to help his mother and sister live in a more comfortable manner. However, after years of poverty, the family will need assistance making their entrance into society. Fortunately, Ivy Carlisle is the secret author of the Miss Manners column and knows exactly how to help this trio navigate the rigors of society. However, is she prepared for the unladylike feelings she has for Jack and the bond she will create with his family? Jack just wants to be a sailor, but duty calls and now he has to navigate the requirements of the Regency era ton. Ivy is enlisted to help Jack polish his gentlemanly manners. As a historical re-telling of "My Fair Lady" it hits all the plot points you need - prejudice being overcome by growing friendship, friendship growing into love, and a little family love and loyalty tossed in for fun. Jack would rather be at sea than fixing the mistakes of his grandfather, the late Earl of Stansworth. Instead, he finds that inheriting his grandfather's wealth and title and securing the welfare of his sister and mother means joining the ranks of high society and living with the aristocracy. Luckily, Ivy Carslisle, the granddaughter of a dear friend of Jack's late grandmother, is willing to teach him etiquette and properly introduce him into society. Jack soon learns that his challenge isn't surviving his new lifestyle but surviving the conspiracies against him as well as keeping himself from falling madly in love with his new tutor. Kiss of the Spindle is my favorite by Allen, but this one was still pretty good. It was just what I was in the mood for, and I read most of it in one sitting. The romance had a slow build, and I liked the friendships with other characters that the leads developed along the way.
I don’t know if I completely bought how much time Ivy spent with Jack and his family without anyone commenting or speculating, but I enjoyed the overall story enough to gloss over the details that seemed less likely.
Sweet, comfortable romance. ( )
