So this book is basically a combination of small town, big secrets and a ghost story. A nanny leaves a family for awhile to care for her grandmother who almost instantly passes away and she goes to work for another place where she can be around lots of children. It's not long after that the mother of the family she worked for becomes a widow and she instantly, eagerly goes back to the family who was so good to her. As they move to the cottage where this woman grew up, the nanny soon realizes that the town treats her differently because of who she works for. She starts getting signs of a ghost haunting them starting with the child Vivi all the sudden having an imaginary friend, one who just happens to have the same name as her dead aunt. As the nanny starts renovating the room that belonged to the dead aunt, there are cryptic messages left underneath the wallpaper. Other than the occassional bump (things such as a mirror breaking), this book did not possess a large amount of horror if that is what you are wanting. I found myself reading this book a little at a time, rather slowly, I had a hard time getting into it. I'm not sure what this book needs, but it just fell flat for me fast. I wish I would have enjoyed it more. Thank you NetGalley. I received this for my honest review. I've had this saved on my wishlist for ages and then the price dropped - and I couldn't remember what the story was about! I enjoyed the mystery in the end, although the big revelations seemed obvious to the reader long before the narrator cottoned on. Live-in nanny Amy travels to Dorset with her newly-widowed employer and young daughter after a tragic death in Paris. The Laurents have fallen on hard times so they move into Julia's childhood home, Reservoir Cottage, which has stunning views over the man-made lake but a terrible secret lurking in the chilly back bedroom. Julia's sister Caroline died in the house, but the village had already turned against the family, accusing the wilful teenager of a deadly crime. Amy, who falls in love with the equivalent of the squire's son, wants to get to the truth before her young charge, Viviane, becomes Blackwater's next victim. Overall, I enjoyed Louise Douglas' powerful weaving of a tale both sordid and supernatural. Caroline's presence at the cottage is wonderfully spooky, with hidden messages scratched into walls and whispered voices in the night, but I picked up early on the very ugly truths she was trying to convey. The real dark forces in Blackwater made me feel sick, and I'm not sure that they would have faced justice in the 1960s, but enjoyed Amy's quest all the same. Julia was a bit of weak character, spending half of the novel in a stupor of grief, and I didn't believe in Amy's star-cross'd romance with Daniel for a second - all too too middle class, darling! - but they carried the plot along capably enough. The real heart of the story was the lake, based on Blagdon in Dorset, which really set the gloomy, mysterious tone of the narrative. One for cold and rainy autumn evenings, I think! This novel has got quite a lot of negative reviews and quite a lot of positive reviews all over the world wide web, probably because of the strange mystery and because of the weird story line that's within it, but what truly convinced me to give it a chance was the wonderful, beautiful, and mysterious cover. And I am definitely not sorry for giving it a chance, for it was quite a welcome change for me after finishing the series of Robert Hunter novels. I'll say this: If you are a fan of thriller novels with strange mysteries and weird story lines that eventually lead to satisfying or not so satisfying conclusion, and if you love and are attracted by the covers as beautiful and as wonderful, and as mysterious as this one is, then this mystery thriller novel is pretty much perfect for you and your reading pleasure. That said, if you are not, then I simply suggest for you to stay away from it, because you may end up being very disappointed and cheated in a way by its not as surprising and predictable ending. 10 Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
'Chillingly atmospheric and utterly compelling.' Tammy Cohen When a tragedy forces the family Amy works for as a nanny to retreat to a small lakeside cottage, she realises they desperately need her help and support, so she agrees to go with them. But Amy finds the cottage by the lake unsettling, even sinister. The house is where the children's mother spent her childhood - and the place where her seventeen-year-old sister disappeared mysteriously. Before long, ominous truths begin rising to the surface, and Amy becomes bewitched by the missing sister's story. Can Amy unlock the secrets of the past before they repeat themselves? This is an atmospheric and haunting read, with some really eerie parts that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Although I guessed the story as I was reading, it was still a compelling and thoroughly enjoyable read. Set in the early 1960’s but harking back to the 1930’s it is well constructed and leads you through the intertwining stories of the lives of the characters both past and present in a way that flows beautifully. Intermixed with the eeriness, the bleakness of the circumstances in which Julia, Amy and Viviane find themselves, and the horrific events that unfold is the touching and gentle story of Amy’s developing relationship with Daniel which gives a pleasant relief from the tension building in the rest of the story. I loved the end I am a true sucker for a happy ending, ( )
