Unlock the secrets in your DNA! Discover the answers to your family history mysteries using the most-cutting edge tool available. This plain-English guide is a one-stop resource for how to use DNA testing for genealogy. Inside, you'll find guidance on what DNA tests are available, plus the methodologies and pros and cons of the three major testing companies and advice on choosing the right test to answer your specific genealogy questions. And once you've taken a DNA test, this guide will demystify the often-overwhelming subject and explain how to interpret DNA test results, including how to understand ethnicity estimates and haplogroup designations, navigate suggested cousin matches, and use third-party tools like GEDmatch to further analyze your data. To give you a holistic view of genetic testing for ancestry, the book also discusses the ethics and future of genetic genealogy, as well as how adoptees and others who know little about their ancestry can especially benefit from DNA testing. The book features: Colorful diagrams and expert definitions that explain key DNA terms and concepts such as haplogroups and DNA inheritance patterns Detailed guides to each of the major kinds of DNA tests and which tests can solve which family mysteries, with case studies showing how each can be useful Information about third-party tools you can use to more thoroughly analyze your test results once you've received them Test comparison guides and research forms to help you select the most appropriate DNA test and organize your results and research once you've been tested Whether you've just heard of DNA testing or you've tested at all three major companies, this guide will give you the tools you need to unpuzzle your DNA and discover what it can tell you about your family tree.… (més)

Great resource for those wondering about the ins and outs of genealogy and genetic genealogy. ( )

This book does a very thorough job of helping genealogists understand the ins and outs of genetic testing and using the results to aid in genealogical research. Although it can be overly technical at times, the text is very nicely structured, and most of the material should be within grasp of a lay person.

The author uses the three largest commercial genetic testing companies (Ancestry, Family Tree, and 23&Me) to go through the services offered through the testing companies, each type of DNA test, the information the tests provide, how those tests can be used to trace genetic and genealogical heritage, and how to use third-party software and services to do even deeper research.

Also included in the book is a glossary to quickly reference commonly used genetic genealogy terms, a number of different templates to help genealogists begin their research, and a plethora of additional resources and recommended reading for those wanting to learn more.

My biggest criticism of the text is the lack, and poor placement of the illustrations. I often found myself flipping between pages trying to see the various reference images. In cases where the text became complex, I often wished for more or better illustrations.

Although anyone with an interest could read this book, because of how complex it can get, I would only recommended it to a person who has done, or is seriously considering, genetic testing for genealogical research. ( )

This book is a good starting point for learning about DNA testing and genealogy. It provides a layman’s explanation of the science behind the testing, an overview of the four types of tests and their usefulness, and an overview of the major testing companies and third-party tools for analyzing and organizing the results. The clear illustrations will help visual learners grasp the concepts described in the text. Readers may consult the glossary to remind themselves of the meanings of terms and concepts introduced in earlier chapters. The appendices include comparison guides for the types of tests and the major testing companies, downloadable research forms, and sources for further reading.

I have the first edition, published in 2016, and parts of it are already dated due to the speed of change in this field. Readers would do well to explore the blogs and forums on the resource list and follow them regularly in order to keep up with the rapid advances in genetic genealogy. ( )

I did not much need the comparison of available tests or testing companies, but otherwise it is a fine source of answers to genetic genealogy questions. With good graphics. ( )

I read this book on Kindle. A word to the wise: There are a lot of books that really cannot be read as an e-book. This book is loaded with graphs and tables and tiny illustrations that cannot be rendered by Kindle yet are key to understanding the subject material. In fact, I'd venture to say than no scientific textbook should be made an e-book. You lose too much. ( )

Introduction
Genealogical records are not that perfect. Our ancestors had poor memories just like we do. They bent the truth to make themselves younger or seem more favorable just like we do, and they made up stories just like we do. In addition, genealogical records can be altered, improperly transcribed or recorded, or completely lost, even in the years immediately after their creation.
1
Genetic Genealogy Basics
Genealogists are family historians, documenting known information about a family and using historical records to recreate and recover information that has been lost due to time and distance. As a result, personal possessions like family Bibles, wartime letters, and dusty daguerreotypes are among the most treasured items a genealogist can receive from an ancestor or relative. These possessions are often unique and reveal information that may otherwise be lost. Passing down these treasured family records and keepsakes is an important tradition that preserves memories for future generations.
