Camilo is a great writer, though he is hopelessly bound by the romanticism of the time. This is the pinacle of Portuguese romanticism, probably one of the most outrageously romantic European novels of the 19th century (along with Goethe's Werther). The drama verges on the silliness. Yes, everything conjures up to separate them and, yes, they'd rather die than live apart. Not something to read if you're thoroughly modern. ( )
