Graphic Novel Book Club October 2016:

I don't usually go into books, or comic books, that represent this religion without a whole lot of caveats and wariness. I was incredibly surprised by this book, but the respectfulness to the craft and the uses of it, the diety's named (that weren't the most expected, carte blanche knowns).

I really loved the choice to make the whole book a gorgeous black and white and show magic only in colors that suddenly exploded from the page in gorgeous swirls, or ominous hints to the case. I like how nudity both male and female was a background thing, given absolutely no presence or focus in the book or the panels it happened in.

I really would not mind reading more of this one. ( )

I wasn't a big fan of the dialogue, but I liked the story and the art. I'm undecided if I'll give the next volume a go. ( )

I liked this a lot, but I want more!

Reminded me a little of Charmed and a little of Witch Hunter Robin. Hard to say what is going on, but I can tell you this book is about witches and the occult. I like how the witches were handled in this as well. Plus there is a guy named Morgan in this...can't go wrong with a Morgan ;)

Maybe the best thing about this comic book was the art. Loved the black and white with only magical parts with color. Made this book fun too look at as well as read. ( )

The first thing that you'll notice upon opening Black Magick is the art. The art is stunning, despite the very bold choice to work in black and white. Even before I knew anything concrete about Rowan, I was drawn in with the illustrations of a midnight ritual. Some of the dual page spreads in this book are just stunning! And that's after looking at them digitally. I can only imagine how impressive they look in person.

That being said, the three star rating here mainly comes from the lack of story movement in this particular volume. We meet Rowan, and get a glimpse into the double life that she leads. That part really intrigued me. To be a part of the normal police force by day, and be part of something much more magical by night. Which, is the part that I wish was really more focused on. The mystery revolving around Rowan's past, and why she was being hunted, were only barely touched on.

Truth be told, I'll be reading on in this series. It's hooked me enough, that I want to know what happens next. Plus, I can't wait to see more of this amazing art! ( )
