Set in the off-beat Southern town of Willow Hill, North Carolina, Susan Schild's moving and witty novel tells of one woman who loses everything?and finds more than she ever expected. At thirty-eight, Linny Taylor is suddenly living a life she thought only happened to other, more careless people. Widowed for the second time, and broke, thanks to her cheating late husband, Linny has no house, no job, and no options except to go back home. There, in a trailer as run down as her self-esteem, Linny makes a list of things that might bring happiness. A porch swing. A job that nourishes her heart as well as her bank balance. Maybe even a date or two. At first, every goal seems beyond reach. But it's hard for Linny to stay in the doldrums when a stray puppy is coercing her out of her shell?right into the path of the town's kind, compassionate vet. The quirky town is filled with friends and family, including Linny's mother, Dottie, who knows more about heartache than her daughters ever guessed. And as Linny contemplates each item on her list, she begins to realize that the dreams most worth holding on to can only be measured in the sweetness of a life lived to the fullest... "Charming, funny, feisty. I totally loved this novel."?Cathy Lamb, author of My Very Best Friend… (més)

In a nutshell....this is a story of second chances and new beginnings, even if we didn't ask for them. It's about blessings in disguise, the power of COMMUNICATION, and the unwavering love of family. It reminds us in the sweetest way possible to explore all life has to offer, never settle for second best, and keep chasing our dreams.

A little more detail...my first reaction to the plight of our leading lady...poor Linny! Widowed twice over and having to start a new phase once again, definitely not something every little girl dreams about. The long version is revealed in the book, but the short version...the guy was a tool, a player, a middle-age-crisis-case-that-didn't-know-when-he-had-it-good, and Linny was definitely when he had it good. His death while mourned was more of a door-closes-window-opens situation, but at least she has a good friend, loving family, and a sweet new pup to help her get by. The challenges she faces in the coming days will test her fortitude, ambition, and strength...both bodily and of heart...and though pitfalls and our girl Linny are best friends to a degree, the way she bounces back (almost) every time makes her truly shine.

In the end, it was indeed a "sweet dream" to see Linny finally come into her own. Recommended read for Women's Fiction and Chick Lit fans in their teens and beyond.

Laugh out loud and shed a few tears with Linny in this story about starting over. I love it when an author creates a character that feels like a friend, and Susan Schild did just that with Linny. Set in Willow Hill, North Carolina, things have gone really bad—bottom of the pit bad in Linny’s life. She has been widowed twice, the first one took her heart, and the second one took everything and now she is starting over from scratch. Moving home at 38 isn’t appealing, and neither is the broken down trailer she must now call home. She’d like nothing better than to wallow in her misery, but wallowing doesn’t pay the bills and she’s broke. Things are looking bleaker by the minute when a stray puppy shows up at the trailer and distracts her enough to keep her mind off her problems. With her new furbaby in tow she’s goes to the local Vet’s office and meets Dr. Jack. He seems like a nice friendly guy and he wants to help her, so along with her family and old friends she starts meeting new people. Then someone suggests that she make a Dream List to really get in touch with her new normal, and Linny goes for it not knowing if she’ll end up with Sweet Dreams or Bad Nightmares.

I liked all her kooky characters, and with that touch of a sweltering southern summer this book just yells beach read. Come along for some unexpected adventures in book one of the Willow Hill Series, the next one is coming out soon. I’m giving it 5 stars for an entertaining story that left me smiling. ( )

Linny is down on her luck after her cheating husband dies of a heart attack in a hotel room with his girlfriend and leaves her with a ton of debt. Now she is a widow for the second time in 5 years and has to return home to live in a run down trailer on her mother's property. The good news is that she has a loving but eccentric mom, a wonderful sister and a caring best friend. She also has a job but she doesn't know how much longer she can tolerate it. Her self esteem is at an all time low and she doesn't know which way to turn. Her sister encourages her to make a list of what she wants out of life and to start working on it - one step at a time. This story is about Linny's quest to make her dreams come true. The book is a real 'feel good' story - it's a fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ( )
