Anthony Bridgerton hasn't just decided to marry--he's even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended's older sister, Kate Sheffield--the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate's the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams. Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands--and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Anthony and Kate's story is a hate to love historical romance. I have to say in reading this second book in the series that at times it doesn't feel like I'm reading a book set back in the early 1800s. I rather liked Kate's character and was rooting for her throughout the book. Another easy read. ( )

Like so many others, I recently found my interest rekindled in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton saga. The Viscount Who Loved Me is the story of Anthony, the eldest of the Bridgertons. We met him in the first book as his sister Daphne was courted by his best friend (and fellow rake). Now, Anthony has decided that it is time to marry a young lady to carry on the family line. Enter the Sheffields.

As is true in so many Regencies, it is clear to the reader which of the sisters Anthony will marry. What is different from most Regencies is about an equal amount of time is spent with the couple after their wedding. As is usual in this series, at least so far, there are problems that must be overcome as the couple grows in the marriage. I suspect I was not the only one of this book's readers to cry out: "COMMUNICATION! You need to talk to each other." I did like the wittiness and sparkle between the main characters. And I loved Newton, the pudgy corgi. And Lady Whistledown's introductions to the chapters were priceless. I confess I heard them in Julie Andrew's voice.

The current Kindle version of the book includes a short story at the end. Be aware that it contains spoilers for the later books. While the book stands alone, it is best read in order. That way, there are fewer spoilers for the earlier books.

I would suggest this for readers of Regencies. Fans of the TV series should only read it if they don't mind knowing the outcome of season 2. I liked it enough to buy the sequel. ( )

The story of the eldest Bridgerton; Anthony, has decided to marry, it's time and he has decided that he will not outlive his father so he has also decided that he will not be marrying for love, as he doesn't want his wife to suffer like his mother has.
He fixes on Edwina Sheffield who is beautiful and seems a good match. The only problem is her half-sister, Kate, who drives him crazy and he can't seem to keep her out of his mind. Slowly but surely their relationship seems to be getting deeper and he fears what this might do to him. The two of them are such good sparks against each other and they seem to bring out the best in each other, except in croquet.
The ebook re-read had an extra epilogue with another go at the croquet game. ( )

Anthony Bridgerton has a plan. He has decided that it is time for him to marry and, after looking over the year's crop of debutantes, has chosen Miss Edwina Sheffield who is the season's Incomparable.

Edwina's older sister Kate is also making her debut since family finances couldn't cover two separate trips to London and two separate seasons. She has taken a strong dislike to Viscount Anthony Bridgerton because she does not believe that reformed Rakes make good husbands. She loves her half-sister Edwina and wants her to find a proper love match.

As head of the Bridgerton family since his father's untimely death when Anthony was eighteen, Anthony is not used to not getting what he wants. Edwina fills all the categories he wants in a wife and, most of all, he doesn't love her. He believes that he will die young as his father did and doesn't want to have any more emotional entanglements in his remaining few years.

He and Kate are constantly butting heads but he is getting more and more intrigued with her. When the two are found in a compromising position, they are forced to marry which doesn't really suit either of their plans. It was entertaining watching them fall in love and come to admit it.

I liked the Bridgerton's competitive games of Pall Mall where they see who can be the best schemer and cheater. Kate fits right in and holds her own quite well with the Bridgertons. I liked the way Anthony dealt with Kate's terror of thunderstorms and Kate dealt with Anthony's fear of dying young.

This is an excellent romance packed with humor and heart. ( )

Getting your hands on the Bridgerton series these days in paper format requires patience, stealth and dedication and with good reason. These hilariously fun books are just what we need post-2020 to simply sit down and enjoy. So as we impatiently wait for Season 2 of Bridgerton on Netflix, we can get a head start on Anthony’s story and find out more about Kate. If the series is anything like the book, we are promised a hilarious scene involving an over-eager doctor, one compromising situation that was 100% innocent and one that will bring happy tears amongst the wit and costumes.

Anthony has always been a rake who refused to settle down, but something has changed this season. He’s now decided that it’s time to do his duty and get married. But not for love of course. His bride must be pleasant and tolerable and that’s where Edwina Sheffield comes in. She’s beautiful, sweet and sensible unlike her half-sister Kate who is not conventionally beautiful but incredibly smart and to the point. Edwina famously declares that she won’t marry without Kate’s approval, which has Anthony scurrying to charm her. But Kate is far too stubborn and clever to be charmed and she tells Anthony that directly. Her honesty and sharp tongue strangely captivates Anthony to the point where Kate is the only thing he can think about. Kate too, is thinking about Anthony in terms other than potential brother-in-law. It will take a country house party to throw them together, but a lot more for them to be honest with each other.

One thing I really like about Julia Quinn’s novels is that they are not just a lead up to a happy ending that stops with the wedding. There is just as much adventure to have after the wedding as well as character development. Of course, the witty dialogue is at its peak with Kate, who says what she thinks in the most perfectly barbed fashion. There are also plenty of scenes that will delight, and are just begging for a screen adaptation (we simply must see Bridgerton Pall Mall, if only to get a clear visual of Anthony and the pink mallet). Quinn’s scenarios are inventive, never staid. Keen eyed readers will also note that some of Anthony’s story described here was played out in Season 1 of the television series – I’ll be interested to see if that happens in any of the other books. But don’t worry, this book is truly for the Anthony/Kate lovers as their barbs/anger/romance are furiously worked across the page. It’s a great enemies to lovers story with the final dramatic scene coming with a later (but more realistic in my book) happily ever after.

Bring on Benedict (who doesn’t seem to get as much page time here, with Colin doing the cheeky job of throwing Anthony and Kate together!)
