Pontiac distinguished itself from other GM brands. Not only did it create the GTO, Firebird, Trans Am, and Bonneville, but the company's dedicated staff designed, developed, and built some of the most audacious and progressive experimental and concept cars. The management, engineers, and designers had a bold and distinct vision for Pontiac, and these cars were infused with their unique passion and vision. With a keen eye on the future, Pontiac created ground-breaking designs to show its customers what was possible. Pontiac Concept and Show Carsgives you a comprehensive perspective of these landmark cars in the history of automotive design. Don Keefe, Pontiac historian and former editor of Smoke Signals, takes you on a fascinating tour of Pontiac's automotive visions and wildest creations. Some of the cars never went beyond the experimental stage; others became prototypes. You learn the inside story on the design, modeling, and fabrication processes. And you are shown an automotive future that could have been, and the cars that became history. During the 1950s, Pontiac concept cars such as the Bonneville Specials, Strato Streak, and La Parisienne wowed the public at the Motorama show. During the 1960s and 1970s, Pontiac was tapped into the youth market and the radical designs that used European influence to create aggressive sports/muscle cars. The GTO Flamme, XP833, Firebird Pegasus, Cirrus, Banshee, and others piqued interest and kept enthusiasts coming back for more. These fascinating and innovative Pontiacs from 1939 to the 1980s and beyond are examined in exquisite detail. Pontiac fans, as well as auto history buffs, will enjoy reading and learning about these cars as well as Pontiac's Project X car program. If you've been looking for a book that authoritatively and comprehensively covers the remarkable and influential Pontiac prototypes of the past, or simply love concept cars in general, this book will entertain you for hours.… (més)

Since I mostly acquired this book for the documentation of the fantasy cars, I really have no complaints. However, I do have a certain sense of a lost opportunity, as the writer, who dearly loves the products of the Pontiac mark, could have spent a little more time considering how one of GM's so-so brands came to have its moment of fame, before being swamped in "name-plate" engineering, and the period when General Motors became little more than General Malaise. Call it the difference between marketing "excitement," and delivering genuine performance; particularly when just throwing horsepower at the problem was no longer an option. Keefe displays the insight and knowledge to have taken an analytic tack, but really didn't seem to have a thesis, and it would have elevated this book. ( )

This is an interesting and good retrospective on Pontiac and their concept and show cars - I think the only negative is the direct-computer-to-printer quality of the images - they aren't as clear as real printing press printing. The content itself if rather enthralling - you'll spend hours in this book - even if you don't care much about the text the interesting concept photos will suck you into reading the text. This is a largish, coffee table book at about 10x10 inches - large enough that the photos lend themselves well but not so large that you feel like it needs legs. I think all Pontiac fans will enjoy this - but really the inducement is in the nature of halo and concept cars themselves - what automotive enthusiast isn't a fan of car concept and design?

I found myself looking back over this book several times - as mentioned, the photos draw your forward and the text bring you back. I think Don Keefe is a fine author, certainly he kept me interested and entertained. The book itself has a stitched binding and a dust jacket that mimics the pictorial covers. It's fairly hefty for it's size, as the paper is all coated. I think if you're a designer, an auto-collector or just someone who appreciates the concept and halo car genre, you'll enjoy owning this book.

This is a great book for Pontiac enthusiasts. It has concept cars that you may never have heard of. After reviewing this book I shared it with an auto junkie I know. He is not necessarily a Pontiac type guy but after reading the book found it piqued his interest more in the auto maker and the ideas behind the concepts. Great pictures and detail throughout the book. Nicely done. ( )

Are you into Pontiacs? Do you like the innovating and sometimes surprising Concept Cars that come out of Detroit? Then this a book that should be in your library. Did you know that Pontiac made a Catalina Safari Pickup? Well, they did and it’s all in this incredible book by Don Keefe. From Pontiac’s first race car in 1926 till the 2006 Supercharged LSX Solstice and everything in between. There are beautiful full color photographs and informative text. The author does an excellent job of covering his topic. The book makes a lovely coffee-table book. Several visitors to our house have picked it up to look at the pictures and been drawn in to the text, remarking on the quality of the book. This is an excellent selection particularly for fans of the Pontiac brand. ( )

A beautiful book.....Pontiac Concept And Show Cars. Whenever doing reviews for car books that I get (to which I get a lot) I always feel the need to be honest and mention that I personally am not the biggest car fan. If I am being completely honest I am not much of a car fan at all. BUT, I married one of the biggest car fanatics "in this here parts" and he comes from a family of car fanatics and I gave birth to 3 car fanatic boys. SO with that being said, I am the hugest book fan. I love books. Books are my life. I decided to combine the two...my love for books...my desire to get access to as many car books as I can for my husband and boys. From that I have found myself totally engrossed and obsessed with reading these kind of books. I've learned a thing or two...and have found myself educating my husband on some car tidbits that he himself did not know. He's actually envious of me for my beautiful collection of "bad ass" car books.

So, my car book reviews are usually two part in that I say what I love about the book and then I say what my husband and his family love about the book because they are the true fanatics that get to indulge in my book rewards.

I thought this book was beautifully made...the pictures amazing. The tidbits and facts wonderful. This makes a beautiful edition to my shelf but it also is wonderful to set on my coffee table and enjoy someone picking it up and going through it. Stylish, sleek, wonderful...Don Keefe has put great detail, time, and effort into this book and it shows.

As for my husband, he enjoys the book. I catch him browsing through it every now and then and when his father comes over to work on their project cars, they will discuss things he read in the book...go through it when they are done. My children admire the book as well...flipping through to look at the "cool" pictures.

So yes, I absolutely recommend this book to anyone that has a love for cars, vintage and now. The beauty of the book is well worth the price.

Thanks as always to the wonderful peeps at LibraryThing for my copy of this book that I received for free in exchange for an honest review to which I gladly and voluntarily gave. ( )
