Passion, rivalry and family secrets in the South of France... Zoe inherits a perfume scent that could be the key to revealing her mother's long-lost family and hidden past. It also might give her the edge she needs to win a prestigious fragrance contract-and defeat her rival, a passionate Frenchman named Philippe, once and for all. But when the formula is mysteriously stolen, Zoe embarks on a life-changing quest to reclaim her legacy. Set in the fragrant flower fields of Provence, the "wonderfully drawn cast of characters" (Anne Girard, author of Madame Picasso) in this "beautifully written" (Readers' Favorite) saga will send you on a sweeping trek across the South of France. "Journey into a perfumer's world where lush French scenery, long-held family secrets, irresistible romance, and magnificent scents are brought to life." - Juliette Sobanet, best-selling author Book club discussion guide included. This novel can be read as a standalone or as part of the From Paris to Provence series. Each book in the series brings to life its own unique characters yet all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France. Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write A Perfumer's Secret? When I visited France after college, I "discovered" perfume. It seemed so glamorous and French, and the creation aspect fascinated me. To create perfume is to be an artist-and art has always inspired me. The aspect of an inheritance and the fact that this story takes place in France make your novel sound similar to both A Paris Apartment and The Perfume Collector. What unique treasures will readers find in A Perfumer's Secret? My novel is a trip to Provence, set to the rhythm of scent. Zoe, the main character, is so passionate about perfume that she sees everything through that lens, offering a fresh perspective of the world around her. In the novel, you'll also find plenty of flower fields, sidewalk cafés, romantic walks along the coast... And there is the excitement of competition, as Zoe tries to win a major fragrance contract. Would you call this a French romance book? Yes, it's a South of France romance! There are actually a few love stories in this novel: mother-daughter relationships, first love, friendship. But the most prominent is the romance between Zoe and Philippe, two perfumers whose passion for perfume turns into passion for each other. What do you hope readers will take away from A Perfumer's Secret? I hope readers will rediscover scent and how just a whiff can transport us to a feeling, a place, a discovery. And I hope they will enjoy this little trip to Provence and the world of perfume! So this book is part of a series? Yes and no. Each novel in the From Paris to Provence series brings to life its own unique characters and can be read as a standalone, but all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France: - A Perfumer's Secret - Paris, Rue des Martyrs - Paris Jungle If you like reading about passion, family secrets and romance set in France, you'll enjoy A Perfumer's Secret. This is probably one of the best stories I have ever read. Just like smelling your favorite scent or perfume, this story will make you heady with all the smells and descriptions that are so vivid. It was like being there myself in Grasse, France, testing for myself the different scent samples. It was a very delightful experience.

Have you ever smelled something and remembered a whole story from that smell alone? This story is like that. A single scent, very vivid that it will bombard you with varying emotions that they will appear so tangible that you can taste them. From that single aroma, it's like going through the emotions the perfumer has gone through while creating that scent. You will smell and taste all the heartaches and triumphs with just that one long whiff. Reading this story is like that. Yes, you will definitely discover the perfumer's secret.

One of the characters here that I don't really like but stood out not in a good way is Philippe. He's this type of person who knows that what he's doing or planning is not right but he still chose to do it. So unbelievable, right? Good thing, in the end, he chose to do the right thing. Finally, he actually has a conscience. That saved his character there but still, I did not like him. What bothers me most about his character was he was not actually the most notable one. But his refusal to stand up was a major red mark that makes him a big eye sore.

This story just elicited and demanded a lot of emotions from me. My heart bleeds with the same hurt caused by the heartaches and broken hearts in this story. I was upset and discouraged when Zoe's efforts turned out to be another false lead. But I also rejoiced when she finally found the secret, her secret. This was such a roller coaster ride of emotions. I felt like my heart was bruised but the whole ride was so exhilarating that I can't help but want to take that roller coaster ride over again.

This is a very sweet and aromatic story that will take your emotions up and down. The descriptions are so rich and detailed that you will feel like walking the streets of Grasse and agree that being a perfumer is a very grand profession. I feel like wanting to be one because of this story. This profession is so grandiose and filled with so much passion that you're either in it with everything you've got or better not at all. It's a job that demands your whole being and a passion that's so unyielding. It's like a job that will take you even beyond yourself, beyond your boundaries, and beyond your strictly self-imposed restrictions. Zoe's passion for this science and and art is so overpowering that I can actually touch it. It's this overflowing passion that will drive you to fall in love with her character and this story. The author perfectly captured that.

So yes, this is definitely 5/5 elegant bottles of the most exquisite and expensive perfumes. It's so intoxicating. I think I sat dazed minutes after reading this book. I was so fascinated that I think I was still imagining the scents hours after the story was over. This story will stay with you, just like the scents here that will seem to haunt you. Ah, even while writing this review, I find myself going back and recalling the smells and the feeling associated and involved in creating a specific and unique perfume. I want to relive the feeling I had while reading this story and how this somehow squeezed my heart and made it want to live life with so much passion for just life itself. So it's true, the greatest emotions can always create a powerful scent. Just ask a perfumer.

Men are like perfume. They envelope us with intensity, and then slowly but surely, they drift away.

Take a beautiful location in the south of France, add a tale about the creation of fragrance and deeply flawed characters chasing the perfect formula while managing mystery, romance and power and you have a fabulous read guaranteed to transport you from the daily grind. Particularly fascinating are the details and lingo of the perfume industry. I loved the evocative descriptions of the various components of creating the "juice" and the characteristics of each ingredient. So glad to have discovered author Adria J. Cimino who has written several books with French locations. I intend to read them all! ( )

An enjoyable book about a young perfumer who returns to France to learn about her mother's secret past in a wealthy family. While the plot was not surprising, it was well done and moved at a good pace. The characters were very interesting, and even secondary characters were given backstories, which added to the book. The characters were complex, but the book as a whole was easy to read. Overall, I would recommend this book. ( )

This was a lovely book about relationships and perfume.

Zoe works as a perfumer. Her mother, Barbara Rose, was also in the business but died several years ago. She believes that she doesn't have any other family until she receives an inheritance from someone claiming to be her great-aunt. She goes to Grasse, where her mother was from and receives her inheritance and that is stolen the very next day. She tells herself she can use the formula for the perfume her mother always were to revise for an important contract she is working on.

Ms. Cimino takes Zoe on a journey while in Grasse that brings her closer to her mother. Along the way she discovers more about herself, she also finds love. Blended with the Zoe's story is side stories that deepen the connection to the characters. ( )

Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing .
Although I liked the French 'atmosphere' of this book, which I felt was well done I found it difficult to relate to the characters and, at least to start with, to remember who was who as there seemed to be quite a few introduced without being fully 'fleshed out'. So, an OK book but not brilliant. ( )
