While there were some times that the story didn't quite work for me and I lost which character I was with, this is an interesting conclusion to the sequence. Lord Jonmarc Vahanian is trying to get his revenge for what has been done to his wife, Lady Carina, who is stuck between vampire, or Vayash Moru, and life as she is a healer and they don't change. She also is determined to heal the source of magic as it's causing problems. At the same time Martris Drayke is trying to consolidate his kingdom while his wife, Kiara, deals with an evil whispering campaign that is losing her some of her support in a foreign country.

I did enjoy it, much of the whispering campaign was quite believable and the characters were very solid, I really like Jonmarc and I enjoyed how the characters had their own personalities.

I would recommend this series. Nothing earthshattering, quite readable ( )

Martin's fourth entry in this fantasy series continues where Dark Haven left off, King Tris laying siege to the rebel mage stronghold, Jonmarc in the middle of a vampiric war, Cam imprisoned and Kiara in fear of assassination. All that sounds very exciting, however there's a definitive lack of tension and suspense present. The plot in more deft hands might have been a thrilling fantasy tale, with Dark Lady's Chosen the narrative style is too simplistic and there are too few unrevealed cards to keep the story interesting. In all, it's too neatly packaged, not dark enough and too predictable. More suited to early adopters of the genre than readers who are well seasoned. ( )
