These two fascinating collections of folk tales collected and rewritten by Jacobs for children are supplemented by his notes and comments on the sources. They were first published in London in the early 1890s. This 2002 edition includes the original illustrations and an introductory essay by Haas about Jacobs, both his methods and the reasons for his editorial choices, and his life and scholarship.

Included are the Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Henny-Penny, The Wee Bannock, The King o’ the Cats, and Tamlane among many others. It would be more accurate to label these collections folktales in the English language and its dialects, since the collection includes tales from many parts of the United Kingdom, and entries from Australia and the United States.

There is entertainment and wonder herein for both five-year-olds and scholars. ( )

Some of the notes at the end of the book were more interesting than the fairy tales themselves. There were a lot of the same stories in this collection that I've read in other collections. ( )

Aivan erinomaisia lyhyitä tarinoita ruuhkabussiin, aamun juuri heränneen mielen muuttamiseksi hymyhuuliin ja viihtyvyyden lisäämisen.
Kuuntelin lähinnä lyhyitä hauskoja tarinoita parantaakseni englannin lausumistani ja saadakseni aamuni paremmin käyntiin. Suosittelen =) ( )

The same title was used both for the original collection (published in 1890) and for a modern anthology (published by Puffin paperbacks in 1970) which includes a selection of tales from "English Fairy Tales" (1890) and "More English Fairy Tales" (1894). There is also a combined edition of the original two books, also called "English Fairy Tales", but distinguished by a subtitle "...being the two collections".

The same title was also used for a collection taken mostly from the 1890 original but also some from the 1894 "More English Fairy Tales (published by Frederick Muller, Ltd. of London in 1942. That the 1965 tenth impression of the Muller edition is a hardcover can be proved because a member here owns a copy of it.)
Abridged from English Fairy Tales (1890) and More English Fairy Tales (1894). Please do not combine.
