"When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott--once his assistant, now a partner in the agency--set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been--Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that."--Amazon.…

Sometimes you read a book or watch a movie and think "they made this just for me" it is so perfectly attuned to your sensibilities. "Lethal White" is a book that fits that description for me. It combines all the plot intricacies and elements of an Agatha Christie mystery with a literate style which develops real characters in meaningful ways. I feel like Cormoran and Robin are becoming real people to me and their stories are wonderfully fleshed out in this book, in ways that are both surprising and yet realistic. Galbraith (Ms. Rowling writing under a pen name) never wastes a clue or fact. Little bits of business end up paying off in the long run. I was able to read this in mostly one day as I traveled back from the West Coast and I think that heightened my sense of the quality of the plot. It was amazing to me how everything fit into the true story. What a fantastic book. ( )

J.K. Rowling's fourth book featuring detective Cormoran Strike and business partner, Robin Ellacott, picks up where Career of Evil finishes. Sadly, Robin is marrying her twat fiancée, Matthew Cunliffe. Things then shift forward a year when two intertwined stories are told: (1) a disturbed man seeks Strike's help in the case of murdered child when the man was a child himself, and (2) the British Minister of Culture, Jasper Chiswell, hires Strike to look into blackmail threats, with London preparing for the 2012 Olympics. There are several characters that overlap since the murder took place on the grounds of the Chiswell estate, and the disturbed witness’s brother is one of the organizers of protesters against the Olympic Games.

Both Robin's and Cormoran's personal lives are a mess, and their mutual attraction smolders in the background. The plots are very involved, especially strife in the Chiswell family (lifestyles of the rich and shameless (including Charlotte), and the bohemian lives of the brothers and their mates.

Like the later Harry Potter books, this one is much too long, with too many plot threads and characters, there were a few investigative breakthroughs that seemed improbable, but the culprit was well hidden from readers. ( )

If I hadn't gone away for the weekend I would have blown through this even faster. I'm not sure it needed to be this long but the books in this series are always satisfying. I listened to the audio and Mr. Glenister, as always, is the perfect choice. His pronunciation of "Kanye" seems off, but that's my one and only quibble.
JK's descriptions of old pubs are so loving, they always make me want to be in one.
Her portrait of lefty mansplaining and the party scene were spot on, and although I have not experienced British class drift for myself, I relished her writing about it. ( )

I enjoyed it. Some of the connections were too convenient but overall, it made me happy. I can't help but love Cormoran and Robin. Not necessarily together but as individuals, I love them. ( )
