"When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott--once his assistant, now a partner in the agency--set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been--Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that."--Amazon.… (més)

While I have greatly enjoyed the first few books in the Cormoran Strike series, the last two (Career of Evil and now Lethal White) haven't stuck with me. In fact, I had to go and read a play by play review of the 3rd book because Lethal White picks up right where the 3rd one left off and I was having a difficult time remembering what had happened to Robin and Strike. The rest of this review will likely have spoilers for the first books in the series, but I will leave out spoilers for this, the 4th, in the series.

This latest book in the series will likely be the same when I go to read the 5th in the series (if there is one). I believe one of the reasons for this is the vast cast of characters in this book. I have listened to each of the books and Career of Evil, as well as Lethal White, has left me with too many characters to keep straight in my head. Lethal White follows a snobby upper class family whose patriarch (Jasper Chiswell) is a Member of Parliament. Chiswell has had multiple wives/lovers so his many children are interviewed and brought into the plot as Strike and Robin try to find out about a black mailing scheme. At the same time, a few families who know the Chiswells both from Parliament and another who worked for him at their house, are brought into the mix. AND EACH FAMILY/PERSON COULD BE SEEN AS SUSPICIOUS (or at least trying to hide something). All in all, there were just too many characters to keep straight and how each character was related to each other and why/how they are hiding important pieces of information.

The pacing of the plot moved at a pretty good pace - there were a few moments that it dragged or became repetitive though. For those who have read Career of Evil, you know that Robin and her fiance (now husband) have had quite the rocky road in the series. While, I won't spoil anything that happens in their relationship in this book, I got tired of the back and forth between them and while I realize relationships as long as theirs have complications, I wanted things to be resolved more quickly one way or the other between Robin and Matt.

All in all, I didn't feel as invested in this story probably because none of the Chiswell family had much for any redeeming qualities and unfortunately probably will have to read a synopsis of this book once the new one comes out. I'm hoping the next one has me as interested in the plot as the first two books in the series did. ( )

A psychotic man haunted by memories of a little girl strangled and buried in a pink blanket goes missing. An MP hires the agency to find blackmail material against those trying to blackmail him. He then commits suicide but the family keeps the agency on to investigate his death.

This is a long read, but personally, I loved that. There is plenty going on and keeping all the threads in your head can be a challenge, but that is exactly what I enjoyed. I like quick reads but I also like books that when you look back you think wow, there was a lot in there!

Details of Strike's and Ellacott's relationships are interwoven with the work of the agency. The agency is the main focus for both of them, which is why they get on so well, when they are honest with each other. Their personal lifes complicate their professional relationship and this is beautifully depicted, life is complicated and it is hard to watch someone you love and respect struggling with their lives.

Things and people take time to change, so I felt the length of the book was well justified as we see Robin's professional development and confidence grow as her personal life becomes more confined and restricted until she gains the strength to change.

Cormoran, who is not over the end of his 16 year tempestuous relationship with Charlotte, is rebounding and hurting people because he can't invest emotionally. Both partners are damaged in different ways, the agency is their one solid and overriding commitment and one that unites them. But is it love?

Their client's dysfunctional family rooted in the upper classes, shows that relationships can be toxic at all levels. The cruelty and damage inflicted is heartbreaking and the anger and resentment, though to be deplored, is understandable. From Billy, haunted by a hallucinatory half-memory and beaten since childhood, to all the Chiswell children haunted by the memory of a saintly Freddie; the eldest son killed in action and whose death Strike investigated. “I never had so many people ask me whether the dead officer had been shot in the back by his own men.”

The book casts a glimpse into the world of politics, again both extremes. High machinations of office and how everyone knows everyone and collude with those in the same circle. How outsiders, no matter their proficiency, will always face abuse and closed ranks as the Winns and Aamir Mallik demonstrate.

A lovely feast of a book, to be savoured and enjoyed. I am looking forward to reading Troubled Blood when it comes out in paperback. ( )

Not my favorite. Listening to the book, I kept losing track of who was doing what. And when Cormoran told Robin to figure it out - that she had all the info - I decided that I didn't care that much. Oh well. I will read the next one. ( )
