He walked away from the job three years ago. But Harry Bosch cannot resist the call to join the elite Open/Unsolved Unit. His mission: solve murders whose investigations were flawed, stalled, or abandoned to L.A.'s tides of crime. With some people openly rooting for his failure, Harry catches the case of a teenager dragged off to her death on Oat Mountain, and traces the DNA on the murder weapon to a small-time criminal. But something bigger and darker beckons, and Harry must battle to fit all the pieces together. Shaking cages and rattling ghosts, he will push the rules to the limit--and expose the kind of truth that shatters lives, ends careers, and keeps the dead whispering in the night.… (més)

The Closers is a Detective Harry Bosch novel. From the beginning until the end the novel keeps a pace. It is believable, the settings are well described in Los Angeles and surrounding cities, and it is a disturbing unsolved case. Michael Connelly does a good job keeping the reader guessing as to who did what in the book. Like all of Michael Connelly's books it is well researched and highly recommended in this review. Four stars are awarded here. ( )

Bosch #11 is a really compelling procedural, better than the last couple in the series. Though the ultimate resolution was fairly prosaic, it was compelling and pulse-quickening, and Bosch is a great character. Looking forward to #12 as I work through these in order. ( )

The Closers finds Harry Bosch back in LAPD, working with his former partner Kiz Rider and wearing his old badge, and assigned to the newly designated Open-Unsolved Cases squad. It's a new LAPD, though, with new leadership and new values. The values do not include breaking laws in order to solve crimes: this is made very clear to Bosch upon his re-introduction. He is also clearly aware of the tenuousness of his position and knows he can be immediately dismissed without cause. Bosch has been shown over the course of many novels to be deeply compassionate towards victims and dedicated to solving cases at any cost of effort and risk; however, he is still an adolescent emotionally and is easily baited by recently demoted Irvin Irving, setting off the struggle he must deal with against forces inside and outside the case he and Rider are assigned.
Although, initially, when threatened by Irving, Bosch acts out; he gains control and works through a difficult cold case, managing to thwart Irving's machinations also. The novel closes with a dramatic twist of fortunes as Bosch will continue to chase his mission solving murder cases and Irving walks off thoroughly rebuffed.
