No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. This was my first (and probably my last) read and book #1 in the Inspector Lynley series. Lynley (also an Earl) is paired with Detective Havers, a woman who was demoted in the past for her failure to get along with her colleagues. The pair has been called to Scotland Yard and assigned to work a case where a man's head had been severed and his daughter has confessed. To be honest, I have never seen the lack of cooperation between police units as rampant and nasty as this one; it detracted from the focus of the story. I could not like this book; although I wanted to. Plus, it was too long and moved at a snail's pace. 413 pages ( ![]() floja, por ser a primera de la serie vamos a darle otra chance. Como no se me ocurrió buscar una pareja despareja de policías un aristócrata inglés y una chica de origen obrero. El crimen de una sordidez impresionante This is a re-read after twenty or so years (maybe fifteen). And not a review but mostly notes to self: - So Lynley is 32 in this book, published in 1988. And he's about 38 (I think?) in the latest book in the series, published in 2018. Huh. - I honestly didn't remember Barbara being so hysterical about stupidest things. She gets better in the later books, at least. - I couldn't stand the dialogue of that upper class love square, i.e. Lynley, Deborah, Simon and Helen. It's all the insufferable "oh tommy darling it is positively religious!" and "oh helen old duck, you a naughty little girl!". Who talks like that?? And the worst thing is, THAT will not get better in later books, they will always talk like that to each other. - And of course I remembered the main story very well. Because I was probably traumatized by it, having read it when I was 15 or something. This book was really interesting. At the beginning, I kept thinking that events took place somewhere in 18th century (I was really confused by no mobiles or computers, fireplaces in hostels, and also by the fact that some people have their own servants). I wasn't even born in 1988, so that time seems to me really far away. I liked the main hero and his assistant. It was interesting to get to know them better through their reflections and memories. As it's a detective story, the main thing for me is my inability to guess the killer. And this time I couldn't do this)) I was thrilled to see the outcome of the investigation. And I really liked how the writer integrated quotes from Shakespeare into the book. Sometimes it was a little bit boring for me to read. That's why I gave it 4 stars. But I'm definitely going to read the next books of this series, and I hope I'll enjoy them too. Couldn't put it down, really wanted to know the dirt. A little sorry I knew it all by the end. Urk. Wonder if her protagonist Lynley settles down in course of the series. I hear Lord Peter echoes... Will probably read more. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

To this day, the low, thin wail of an infant can be heard in Keldale's lush green valleys. Three hundred years ago, as legend goes, the frightened Yorkshire villagers smothered a crying babe in Keldale Abbey, where they'd hidden to escape the ravages of Cromwell's raiders. Now into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an axe in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father's headless corpse. Her first and last words were "I did it. And I'm not sorry." Yet as Lynley and Havers wind their way through Keldale's dark labyrinth of secret scandals and appalling crimes, they uncover a shattering series of revelations that will reverberate through this tranquil English valley -- and in their own lives as well.
