I feel like it would be money well spent to buy every family in Australia a copy of this book. We could use a little more empathy for the migrant experience. Also, this is visual story telling at it's very finest. A must-read for all ages. ( )

The Arrival is a wordless depiction of an immigrant's story. The main character leaves his home and family to travel to a new place. When he arrives, he encounters a totally new environment with new creatures and ways of life. Eventually, his family joins him and he becomes the guide as they begin their own exploration of this new place. The art in this book is endlessly interesting and one can spend a lot of time looking at just one or two pages. The. whole story is a compelling tale that provides many opportunities for readers to identify with the situations the character is in, while also feeling transported to a totally different world. This book will be exceptionally useful to help students build up stamina and interest in following stories without reading. It also offers opportunities for community construction and discussion of a story based on the wordless illustrations. It is a great addition to any library, as the topic is one that is common to people of all ages and the illustrations, while other worldly at times, are not scary. ( )
