Each time I discover a new mystery series set in the Highlands of Scotland, I'm all over it like a rash. I've discovered several new authors this way, many of whom are on my favorites list. After forcing my way through Song of the Dead, I can categorically state that Douglas Lindsay did not make that list. I could not connect with any of the characters, and although I liked being reminded of places like Inverness and the Cromarty Firth, soon the only reason why I continued to read this book was to try to figure out what was going on. However, the plot became more and more convoluted, and without a character I could connect with to guide me through the story, I was reading just to get to the bottom of things and finish the book. Douglas Lindsay is not an author for me, but that's not to say that he can't be someone whose writing you enjoy-- especially if you like reading about places like Scotland and Estonia. Ben is a DI in Dingwall, Scotland, having formerly been with the security services. A mission gone wrong in Africa has left him with a fear of flying, so he spends a lot of this book on ferries, trains, and in cars, since he has to travel to Estonia to look into the apparent reappearance of a Scottish man who died 12 years ago. The set up for this was great. The plot then became rather preposterous (and I'm not talking about the whole 'parallel lives/Ben feels the spirit of dead people' elements) - at least I hope there isn't a lot of the sort of crime this book was based around going on. I don't read books I know will have supernatural themes, but they didn't bother me here. Ben was an engaging character, and despite his 'quirks' was good at his job and got on with his colleagues. I'm going to read the others in this series. This one seemed to pile on the noir gloominess a tad too much. The lead investigator also seemed a bit clueless. The main plot of the villains and the final twist were rather unbelievable. Despite a foreboding dark clouded image of Tallinn, Estonia's Toompea (Castle Hill) on the cover, most of the Estonian scenes actually take place in the woods nearby to the Estonian city of Tartu. The research around the Estonian segments did ring true at least e.g. travel times between Tallinn and Tartu etc. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

I read these books out of order but it didn't matter, they were incredible anyway. There are so many twists and turns that I thought I had the plot pinned down when it would shift drastically! This author is the master of atmosphere also! When he wants the reader to feel dread, or fear, or whatever he chooses, the reader feels it to the bone!
This book has a man that has obviously been held against his will and starved, show up at a police station stating he has been held prisoner for several years. This is a man declared dead. It is the start of a wild adventure! Truly a page turner! ( )
