Some of it is rather contrived, and some highly unlikely. But its effectiveness cannot be denied. Nearly fifty years on, tt is Louise Fletcher's performance which dominates the film rather than Jack Nicholson, though he plays his character well. ( )

Which one of you nuts has got any guts?

I am one of the last people on this planet who haven’t read Ken Kesey’s novel. I think one day I will, but I’m not anxious to. Could it be so much better than that movie? I rather doubt it. Don’t give me the old chestnut “the book’s always better than the movie”. Unlike most clichés, this one is not true at all. Books can be better than movies based on them, but they can also be worse. Sometimes book and movie are equally fine: just different.

This is a slow movie about a bunch of loonies. Comedy and tragedy are mixed in it with the same ease as they are in Shakespeare’s so-called “problem plays” and even more so than in Forman’s other two masterpieces, Amadeus (1984) and Hair (1979). The experience is unsettling, all the more so because script, cast and director make no attempt to soften the blow or sweeten the pill. If there is a single conclusion to be drawn from this movie, it is that the border between insanity and sanity is largely imaginary. The best madhouse movies usually make this point, just like the best prison movies erase the difference between criminals and law-abiding citizens: the same species, sometimes even the same breed.

Randall Patrick McMurphy is certainly one of Jack Nicholson’s greatest performances. It takes a truly great actor to make you care deeply about such character. For who is R. P. McMurphy? An ordinary guy, and not a very admirable one. He “fights and fucks too much” (his own words, hard to disagree), he is a bit of a pimp in the worst possible moment, and he doesn’t really have the guts which he demands from the nuts. I am willing to pass over that statutory rape, but which normal man fakes madness to avoid anything? Well, Hamlet did, or said he did.

But one thing is certain. If you put McMurphy in charge of the madhouse, it would soon cease to exist. All inmates would return to their lives outside and neither they nor the world would by any the worse for that. What do they need but to go fishing, play some basketball and have a little party? Not much to ask for, is it? Well, it’s a great deal too much when Nurse Ratched is in charge.

Nurse Ratched is the quintessential sadist. The worst kind of sadist, one that feeds on mental pain. It is curious that one of the FAQs on IMDb is whether Mildred – we’re all on intimate terms with Nurse Ratched, aren’t we? – deliberately pushes Billy off the edge in the end. Of course not. She mocks the flesh she feeds on, but, unlike the merciful predators in nature, she doesn’t kill it. Corpses cannot feel anything, including mental pain. They are as useless to her as the hard cases among the inmates. The fact that Nurse Ratched has become part of the popular consciousness is more than a little disturbing.

Nurse Ratched is also one of the great mysteries in movie history. What happened with Louise Fletcher? She gives a brutally perfect performance here. Once you see a close-up of Nurse Ratched, you’ll never forget that stare. It’s the stuff of nightmares. It makes Hannibal Lecter look cute. Fletcher even got the damned statuette, appearing at the ceremony as a gorgeous woman with a lovely smile in whom it’s impossible to recognise the sadist to end all sadists. But what should have been the beginning of a career proved to be the end of it. Where have you seen Louis Fletcher since? I have seen her in 2 Days in the Valley (1996) and Mulholland Falls (1996), both times in cameos so short that you might miss them if you blink.

The supporting cast is one of the most amazing you will ever see. According to McMurphy, his fellow inmates are “no crazier than the average asshole out walkin’ around on the streets”. This is an exaggeration, of course. But not a big one. Note that most inmates are not “committed”. They are “voluntaries”. This is significant – and scary.

All loonies are acted to perfection. Cheswisk, Harding, Billy and the Chief, even better than that. All of them capture that “no crazier than average” attitude. Nowhere is it demonstrated better than in the beginning of the hilarious fishing scene when they are introduced as doctors. All of them, alas, have become victims of the Ratched Curse. Excepting Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd in the cult crap Back to the Future, there isn’t much chance to see those fellows in anything but cameos.

Then there is the ending, surely one of the greatest of all time. Like the movie on the whole, it is shattering yet uplifting, ironically anticipated by McMurphy’s faking it earlier and even more ironically caused by his faking madness in the first place. Like the movie on whole, it neither softens the blow nor sweetens the pill. Like the movie on the whole, it is a masterpiece as close to perfection as it is possible in this very imperfect world. Like the movie on the whole, it is not for the faint-hearted, nor suitable for fans of superhero movies. ( )

By modern standards, the majority of the film might come off as a bit bland and straightforward, but it is still superbly acted, with plenty of memorable and funny bits interspersed. And in the end, the journey is well worth it, as the amazing ending makes the movie's status as a cinema classic hold up. ( )
