The Averoigne stories of Clark Ashton Smith are among the most vivid and breathtaking in all of fantasy literature. Smith's unparalleled imagination is complimented by the artwork of David Ho, who has created twelve double-page, full color artworks, one for each story, plus an assortment of small devices. Combined with the stunning illustrations, the stories are presented here in an oversize format, over eleven inches tall, with four-color printing throughout on silky Italian paper. With printed endsheets, ribbon marker, signature page, and cloth binding in Italian Cialux cloth, all wrapped in a stunning dustjacket, this is probably the finest book ever created for Clark Ashton Smith's works. Don't get me wrong, the book is lovely; printed on heavy semigloss stock, beautiful illustrations, oversized, signed. The stories are fantastic. There are great extras, a great introduction. But never meant to be read.... It was meant to sit on a coffee table, or a shelf to impress; meant to acquire value, but never to be read. It's too heavy, too bulky, too glossy, too expensive to ever be read. I hate this book.
Still, I couldn't resist buying it.... ( )
