'Queer: A Graphic History Could Totally Change the Way You Think About Sex and Gender' Vice Activist-academic Meg-John Barker and cartoonist Julia Scheele illuminate the histories of queer thought and LGBTQ+ action in this groundbreaking non-fiction graphic novel. From identity politics and gender roles to privilege and exclusion, Queer explores how we came to view sex, gender and sexuality in the ways that we do; how these ideas get tangled up with our culture and our understanding of biology, psychology and sexology; and how these views have been disputed and challenged. Along the way we look at key landmarks which shift our perspective of whats normal Alfred Kinseys view of sexuality as a spectrum, Judith Butlers view of gendered behaviour as a performance, the play Wicked, or moments in Casino Royale when were invited to view James Bond with the kind of desiring gaze usually directed at female bodies in mainstream media. This wasn’t a history of queerness or queer people, but rather something akin to the historiagraphy of queer academic theories and their intersection, over time, with other emergent schools of thought like critical race theory and feminism. Accordingly, I find it hard to call it a history at all, as queer people were absent (a bit ironic, as there is an emphasis on queer is doing rather than being). The only “people” were the authors of the various theories. Told in news-bite sized text with illustrations, which helped break up the tedium of academic jargon, I struggled to be drawn in. ( )

Solid intro and/or review of Queer Theory. Impressed by the amount of information covered in such a short book. Great jumping off point to learn more. ( )

This is a good place to start learning about queer history and theories. Some of it I already knew, but I did learn a few new ideas as well. This also fit a category for the Book Riot Read Harder challenge. ( )
