I'm throwing in the towel. This book is weird and awkward and just too damn long, and that wouldn't have been a problem, but it's not good enough for me to continue.

The translation is good in my opinion. The wording might not be entirely what I'm used too, but not bad.

The beginning was promising. I liked both characters individually, I even felt some resemblance of a connection between them...

Tom is gay,his superior knows, and he's not bothered by it, but advised Tom to keep it a secret from his team until they get to know him better. He’s a pretty laid-back 23-year-old guy, who was born in Israel, and when he was around 10-years-old they moved to America, Texas, of all places. ;D

Later Tom decided he wanted to go back to Israel (the why of it only comes to light toward the middle of the story), and that’s where he serves his country, we get a good explanation about the ’lone soldiers’ from the author. They basically don’t have anywhere to go when they’re not on base, so they need a „foster family”, someplace to go home to. I don't think I understood completely what that meant. I mean technically I did, but emotionally it's more than just a place to stay. They actually become a family for that time. But I think I failed to grasp what it meant to the soldier to have that. Anyway, moving on.

Dan is a newly divorced man. He has everything and nothing. He’s loaded, has his own company, big house. But his very withdrawn, closed off, and a bit depressed he likes his own company, but he's also lonely, and 3 people in his life (his lawyer and old friend, his shrink and his father's widow) mentioned that he needs something to live for, cause he doesn’t have a goal, and that needs to change. So he volunteers to house a lone soldier.

And that’s when weird thing started to happen.
Dan took a 180, and the sour and brooding 30(ish) man became a cheerful, excited and, and… I don’t even know how to describe the sudden mood change the meeting with Tom brought on.

Could it be that Tom had an effect like this on him? It felt strange to me, I’m not sure I completely believed it. The friendship between them was very instantaneous. That might’ve been because once Dan was a lone soldier too, so he understood what Tom was going through. They were so open with each other, maybe too open. Not to weeks, and 3 encounters went by when they were already discussing Tom’s sexuality and sex itself.

And then an other weird thing happened.
Tom went out partying and took home a guy with him, which Dan said beforehand, he was fine with it, as long as he don’t have to see the guy in the morning. And that’s exactly what happened. He came down, only to find Tom and his hookup in the living room talking, aaand the guy even introduced himself to Dan. I mean, WTF? Who does that? Just take your clothes and go. Are you introducing yourself to all of your hookups roommates? Ugh!

And then Tom was in love.
...
...

Which was pretty insta, but things progressed slowly because of Dan's confusion.
I thought about giving up then. But I really wanted to give it a chance.

From then on it was a rollercoaster. There were some good chapters, and then some bad, than good again.
You can read my notes & highlights too.

So I liked the characters, for the most part the emotion was there, but I still felt disconnected from it all. It was messy! I think the biggest problem might have been the flow? I don't know. And I don't want to preach about things I don't know.
If I'd have to rate it, I'd give it 2.5-3 stars. It wasn't all bad.
