Interesting premise. I don't think it quite succeeds at what it was trying to do. ( )

Adolescent girls suddenly develop the power to deliver electric shocks. They can also awaken a latent power in some older, adult women. This power causes dramatic social upheaval, as women become dominant. The gaiting question is whether the world will become a better place or not. The story is told from the perspective of three female and one male character:. Roxy is a teenager from a gangster family in London's East End, Ally, an American teenager fleeing abuse, Margot an ambitious US city mayor (and her daughter), and Tunde, a ambitious Nigerian freelance journalist. Sadly, the tapestry was not well woven: the book is boring, and this reader never felt any connection with the main nor secondary characters. ( )

Utterly dazzling at first. Felt I'd been beaten with a blunt instrument by the end. There are a whole lot of ideas to chew on in Alderman's dystopian matriarchy, but it's hard to focus on them amidst all the gruesomely violent moments. The author has done something really interesting here, and the book would be a great one for a book discussion, but it fell a little flat for me, and teetered on the edge of seeming like it belonged in the Young Adult section ( )

Naomi Alderman's latest novel has gotten a lot of hype prior to its US publication. Thankfully, it's generally deserved. It would have been very easy for a novel about a scenario where women acquire physical power over men to be poorly realized, but Alderman has thought through the implications without resorting to laziness. (Unfortunately, it's difficult to be more detailed without giving spoilers.) Using multiple points of view really works here, as it prevents a single do-everything hero (or heroine), and the framing device of the novel is very clever without giving the game away too soon.

If there's any flaws, it's that the writing is not always as sharp as it could be. The descriptions of women using the power are clear and vivid, but not all the characters are equally well developed. The sharpest chapters are those focusing on religion. Ms. Alderman has also begun acquiring her mentor Margaret Atwood's taste for the comma splice, but hasn't learned to wield it as effectively. ( )

This book is harrowing but incredibly smart and interesting. The premise is simple: what if women were suddenly more physically powerful than men. The mechanism in the novel by which this is accomplished is a genetic mutation whereby women can control and release electricity. The novel illustrates the principle that power corrupts, but more importantly, it shows how thoroughly all of our interactions, institutions, and traditions are by gender. Caveat lector: multiple, graphic and upsetting depictions of sexual violence. ( )

Alderman [...] imagines our present moment — with our history, our wars, our gender politics — complicated by the sudden widespread manifestation of “electrostatic power” in women. Young girls wake up one morning with the ability to generate powerful electric shocks from their bodies, having developed specialized muscles — called “skeins” — at their collarbones, which they can flex to deliver anything from mild stings to lethal jolts of electricity. The power varies in its intensity but is almost uniform in its distribution to anyone with two X chromosomes, and women vary in their capacity to control and direct it, but the result is still a vast, systemic upheaval of gender dynamics across the globe.

Alderman has written our era's "Handmaid's Tale," and, like Margaret Atwood's classic, "The Power" is one of those essential feminist works that terrifies and illuminates, enrages and encourages.

The novel is constructed as a big, brash, page-turning, drug-running, globetrotting thriller, one in which people say things such as: “It’s only you I’ve blimmin come to find, isn’t it?” and “You wanna stand with me? Or you wanna stand against me?” But it’s also endlessly nuanced and thought-provoking, combining elegantly efficient prose with beautiful meditations on the metaphysics of power, possibility and change.
