The Tenth Circle: A Novel (edició 2006)

Like all her books, this one dealt with contemporary issues. Marriage on the rocks because one does not stay faithful, daughter given all the attention in the world still wants peer approval more than anything, teen behaviors that cross the line. The graphic novel part was OK but not my style and as a result did not add much to the story for me. I enjoyed the father with his past still haunting him, his behaviors understood when the Alaska way of living is more fully explained and actually being there by the end with the dogsled race. The mother did not win me with her actions or her reasons. ( )

Always, I can count on a different reaction when Iisten to a Jodi Picoult book! This is book that I am very glad that I listened to it rather than read it. I could not have read it because I am tetterimg on the possiblity of losing sight in my right eye. The other reason that I am extemely sensitive to violence and this will shock and surprise you with that when you do not want it.'

I did not like any of the characters until I was introduced near the end where a boy from the Inouit tribe is introducted.

The father, Dan had grown up as an outsider in the place of the Inouit and even though he did not fit in with them he absorbed their folktales, languages and values but he had a viotent side to him when after he had moved created some graphic stories. He never fit in with anywhere that he was.

His wife Lara made me want to get away from her, she had an affair with one of her students. Their daughter, Trixie was a very confused and to me disturbed person. Lara did feel some closeness, mostly when she was young but I did not feel warmth between her mother and herself. Themes of adultry, jealousy, inability to be authenic, underage s5drinking,drugs, rape and more were there, I got mad when I listened to it, developed rage over most of it until that last disc. Then I felt a wonderful calmness. I loved learning about the Inouit language and culture. Thinking over what the family was like, I would be very happy to live with Inouit instead but I would could never do that. Better to learn from them and make it apart of our life. ( )

I liked this book. There are some things I've come to find melodramatic, cliched, and/or predictable about her writing style and characterization, and yet I'm willing to overlook that stuff because she knows how to weave a darn addicting story. Staying-up-way-too-late-to-finish-the-book addicting. When I need a mental escape, she's my go-to popular author of the moment.

Just as a cautionary note, if you're considering reading it: it does include sexual assault and self-injury as parts of the storyline. ( )

A good page turner and glimpse into the lives of three family members all going through significant personal journeys that impact each other as much as themselves. I always enjoy Jodi Picoult's books for challenging themes, interesting characters and different settings. This one is worth a read. ( )

Would have loved it when I was 12. ( )
