For a series that started out well, the second book underwhelmed and this conclusion is just drawn out and disappointing.

The only reason I gave two stars was due to one wonderful interlude with Lando and Lobot. ( )

I really enjoyed the final installment of the Aftermath trilogy. The wrap up about Palpatine's Contingency plan in case the Empire fell, the layers of manipulation and several different perspectives on the same issues (that for once didn't feel random or tiring) painted the galaxy's scenario beautifully.

With the comprehension that this came out before even The Last Jedi, I understand that many things about the uhm aftermath of empire's fall could be extremely detailed, as they would spoil what was ro come in the movies. But I still felt that something was missing, that there was obviously more to be told, explored, a bigger finale. Even in retrospect, knowing that episode IX didn't do a great job of explaining how exactly somehow Palpatine is back, they could at least let the books do that.

And that's my main takeaway for the trilogy: a great set up, love the themes, but many of the payoffs were left to the movies and they just never came. If there was one thing that was already cooked and served for the Sequel Trilogy to take, it was these book's worldbuilding, and I can't help but feel that they were severely underutilized. ( )

Sendo muito sincero essa trilogia "Marcas da Guerra" merecia um artigo aprofundado, mas para isso eu precisaria de uma pauta, pagto, etc. Como não tenho tempo ou dinheiro (ou pauta) vou dar um apanhado rápido e correr o risco de deixar algo de fora por conta dessa pressa. É a vida.

A história deste livro é bacana e encerra bem a trilogia (que começa morna no primeiro livro, melhora no segundo e conclui bem neste volume) e acrescenta detalhes da transição 'dO Retorno de Jedi' para 'O Despertar da Força'. Mas não entrega nem explica tudo, como era de se esperar.

O foco da história está em personagens conhecidos apenas nos livros, embora os personagens icônicos como Han Solo, Mon Mothma, General Ackbar, Leia, Chewbacca e Lando estão lá com participações importantes ou interessantes. Mas as personagem principais pertencem apenas aos livros. É a piloto Norra Wexley (ok, seu filho Temmin "Snap" Wexley aparece nos filmes novos) e a Gran-Almirante do Império, Rae Sloane.
Além delas, temos bons personagens como o ex-agente de lealdade imperial, Sinjir Rath Velus, a caçadora de recompensas Jas Emari e até o estranho droid de batalha, Sr. Ossudo.
É um grupo improvável de desajustados e pessoas bem diferentes que acaba se unindo e se transformando em mais do que meros aliados, cada um com suas razões e motivações, mas com o propósito principal de terminar com o Império. Como sabemos, ele não acabou com a destruição da segunda Estrela da Morte em "O retorno de Jedi".
O fim do Império acontece de fato neste livro na batalha de Jakku, lar da Rey e um dos palcos do game "Star Wars Battlefront II" (2017).

Como explicar o desenrolar desse final é entregar spoilers de pelo menos dois livros e evocar uma trama de três livros, basta dizer que é um final satisfatório, com momentos marcantes para os personagens (incluindo os canônicos) e talvez de algum modo, todos conseguiram algum tipo de redenção. O final também dá pistas sobre a Nova Ordem e talvez até sobre esse último filme de acordo com imagens do último trailer (supondo que não seja apenas mais uma enganação que se faz nos trailers da Disney).
A coisa mais interessante que parece presente nos filmes da nova trilogia é que o Imperador tinha um plano, uma ideia de como levar as coisas caso ele fosse derrubado.

Porque vale a leitura: é canônico, bem escrito, e tem uma história envolvente (pelo menos os livros dois e três). Tem informações bacanas do universo expandido de Star Wars para os fãs da franquia, coisas que obviamente não estão nos filmes por questão de tempo. Conclui também a participação desse novo time de personagens carismáticos.
De um jeito que só a ficção sabe fazer, esse livro relembra o alto preço a se pagar pela liberdade e como a democracia é complexa (por vezes irritante) e difícil de manter; ao mesmo tempo, explica o porquê a ditadura com sua truculência, formatação do modo de vida e respostas violentas e simplistas é tão atraente para algumas pessoas da galaxia, cuja capacidade de conciliação e compreensão inexiste.

Como as coisas em Star Wars são cíclicas, vamos ver o que nos espera no filme que encerra a história dos Skywalker (o motivo principal para eu terminar essa trilogia: me divertir e procurar pistas sobre o filme que está chegando).

Em tempo: o livro está marcado em inglês mas eu li a versão traduzida da Aleph, por isso a resenha em pt-br (inclusive comprei para prestigiar o trabalho do Guilherme Kroll e a tradução não foi dele kkkk) ( )

An epic finale to an under appreciated series

I have heard a lot of negative criticism towards the Aftermath trilogy. Some deserved, but most definitely undeserved. Yes, the first book was not really good, but books two and three were definitely steps in the right direction. Yes, the writing style might not be one you like, but I still haven’t read anything weirder than N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy with their second person narration and those got her the Hugo three years in a row! So I have to judge this book, and the trilogy as a whole for what it does, provide some explanations as to how the galaxy ended up where it was when TFA released.

Empire’s End deals with the battle of Jakku, the sandy planet where we found Rey at the beginning of the sequel trilogy. Most importantly, it tells us why a battle was fought on Jakku. Empire’s End tells us about the final demise of Palpatine’s Galactic Empire and sets up the rise of the First Order. That was all I was expecting from this trilogy, and thus it delivered.

Admittedly, after Life Debt I was expecting to see more of The Acolytes of the Beyond and I feel we didn’t get near enough.

However, I was surprised for the things I was not expecting, and that was the setup for Rise of Skywalker. Yes, you read that right. Before The Last Jedi was released in theaters we got the first glimpse as to where the trilogy could go. And while the characters in the center of the story dismissed some of the Sith religious dogma we get to see how Jakku played and important part not just in Palpatine’s plan to eliminate the Empire in the event of his death, but how he had plans for his eventual return. We also got Thrawn references... I will always loyal good Thrawn reference.

At the end of the day Empire’s End was an epic conclusion to a good trilogy, and Aftermath remains something every self appointed Star Wars fan should at least read about.
