3.5 YA A bookstore figures prominently in this story, but so do angsty teenage problems. Not sure they balance each other out.....but had to admire some very well-read characters. This is set in Australia, so the concept of clubbing and bars, etc. doesn't quite translate to the typical American high school experience, but the boy-girl dynamics are universal. Rachel is 18 and has just returned to the town where she grew up until age 15. For some reason that isn't entirely clear, and also not entirely believable, she doesn't tell any of the friends she returns to that her brother (whom they all knew) died in the missing 3 years. So she is heavily weighted with a secret that sets up walls between her and Henry, her former best friend and Lola, another close friend. She has not really kept up with either of them while she was away. Complicating things is that Rachel left after she had made a written confession to Henry that she loved him as more than a friend, but he never replied. He is still in a toxic relationship with Amy who seems to use him and was interested in him initially as a competition with Rachel. Angsty, right? Meanwhile, Henry's sister George is pining away after an anonymous letter writer and can't see the boy who likes her right under her nose because of his preppy/cool group status. This is the drama that needs resolution by the end, and it gets there, but really the center of it all, and the best part that makes this book worthwhile is Howling Books, which is owned by Henry and George's parents. They have a section in the store called the Letter Library which contains used books that people are allowed to write in and it becomes a central message system, despite being set in our modern era of texting. So included are the titles, passages and quotes from some of the books and then the messages themselves that people write to each other. So clever to figure out which book the person you are writing to might read and then including a message at the right spot to find it. If this doesn't exist somewhere in real life, it should! The bookstore figures in the drama too because it is becoming a financial burden and needs to be sold. All this comes together by the end and Rachel begins to heal from her grief, so yay! More for a high school audience than a middle school one. ( )

YES: TWO FIVE STAR RATINGS IN A ROW- no you are not seeing things. It's a miracle- but only half as miraculous as this book. ( )

5 stars - i don't read YA stories and i don'r read books that are all about relationships. And yet . . . that is exactly what this book is and i gave it 5 stars. I can't conceive of how a relationship YA book could possibly be written any better and tell its story any more deeply than this book does. It sucked me in because the entire story focuses around a used book shop. Books and the store inhabit the entire story, along with all the young adult angst, drama and passion. The story moved me deeply and left me ruminating on those whom i've lost. This is a very good book. ( )

Everything about this book should have been a hit with me: blue, books, correspondence. It was mostly just shallow and irritating. ( )
