Cute picture book introducing Paris, crepes, a smattering of French vocabulary, and various famous classic works of art. Suzette travels around Paris selling different types of crepes (there's a recipe in the back) in various famous Parisian locales. Art is composites of photographs and cartoons, recreating famous works -- i.e., the Mona Lisa, Manet's "Luncheon on the Grass", "La revue blanche" by Toulouse-Lautrec etc. Fun. ( )

Children will enjoy this book about a crepe seller in Paris. The author used pictures and artificats from her own trips to Paris and then illustrated Suzette and her cart into the pictures. ( )

Suzette has a crepe cart, and this is a typical day for her: mixing batter, going to the market for fruit, making crepes for friendly customers, heading home. Back matter includes Suzette's crepe recipe, a glossary of French words used in the book, and notes on the pictures (scenes are based on real places in Paris, and characters are based on figures in famous artworks (though some of these are a bit of a stretch)).

A very nice, almost nonfiction-y day-in-the-life story of a crepe maker in Paris.

"About the Art: The pictures in this book are mixed-media collages made up of color copies of photos taken by the author on numerous trips to Paris; ephemera such as postcards, tickets, and wrappers....and artwork colored with markers and colored pencils, cut out with scissors, and pasted onto paper painted with acrylics." It was the Paris setting that persuaded me to review my first-ever book app.

Crêpes by Suzette is a book app that was developed from
the children's picture book of the same name written by Monica Wellington.

Although the book itself is now out of print,
I was, happily, able to find a copy of the actual book at my public library.

It was a taste test.

I read the real book first.
Then I went through the book app.

And the result?

I loved the real book.

But...oh, I hate to admit this...I loved the app, too

.
Here are the things I loved about the book and the app:

1. Both the book and the app have the crêpe recipe.

2. On the app, you can read the story to yourself or it will read the story to you.

3. On the app, the story can be translated into French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Italian.

4. On the app, there is wonderful French music and French sounds in the background. (The author said she collected these in Paris on her digital recorder.)

5. On the app and in the book, there is a map of Paris with all the stops highlighted in the story.

6. On the app, there is a crêpe maker's demo video.

7. On the app, there is a crêpe cooking lesson.

8. In the book, it is explained that Suzette's customers in the story are based on figures from famous paintings and sculptures by French artists.

9. In the book, there is a glossary of French words used in the story.

Conclusion: Magnifique! ( )

Crepes by Suzette is a mouth watering story of the journey in selling Crepes in Paris. Suzette's cart is filled with various ingredients that fill her crepes, peaches, jellies, and various fruits and fillings. On Suzette's journey she meets up with various interesting people, children coming home from school, workers on their breaks, people in parks, outside museums, musicians on the street, all happy to taste and purchas Suzette's crepes. Suzette ends her day with a special order, for honey mooners as her day is finally over, and she is tired from a long days work. Suzette is ready to come back with her delcious crepes and street cart. ( )
