A sharply intelligent novel about friendship, lust, jealousy, and the unexpected complications of adulthood in the 21st century. Frances is a cool-headed and darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. Her best friend and comrade-in-arms is the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi. At a local poetry performance one night, Frances and Bobbi catch the eye of Melissa, a well-known photographer, and as the girls are then gradually drawn into Melissa's world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman's sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband, Nick. However amusing and ironic Frances and Nick¿s flirtation seems at first, it gives way to a strange intimacy, and Frances¿s friendship with Bobbi begins to fracture. As Frances tries to keep her life in check, her relationships increasingly resist her control: with Nick, with her difficult and unhappy father, and finally, terribly, with Bobbi. Desperate to reconcile her inner life to the desires and vulnerabilities of her body, Frances's intellectual certainties begin to yield to something new: a painful and disorienting way of living from moment to moment. Written with gem-like precision and marked by a sly sense of humor, Conversations with Friends is wonderfully alive to the pleasures and dangers of youth, and the messy edges of female friendship…

On finishing this book, I gave it 2 stars. Now, a couple of weeks later, as I write this review, I'm not even sure why I gave it that many.

It bored me. There's a narcissistic adolescent-in-her-20s, a flaky friend, an affair with a shallow married man. But there is almost no plot and zero character development. It's like Young-Adult met Chick-Lit and they sat around whinging about their privilege.

Occasionally a book can get away with a lack of plot and engaging characters if the writing is wonderful. This one can't and doesn't. There is no life to the writing at all; it's all flat - it feels like something a bot might have written. As if that wasn't enough, there is minimal punctuation - there are commas and full stops and question marks, but nothing more. No quotation marks, and as if that wasn't enough, all the dialogue is written in "he said...she said...I said...he said...I said..." style.

This needed something - anything! - to make it good, but nothing did. ( )

I blasted through this entire book while waiting for a delayed flight. A detailed and realistic story of the relationships between a group of people, told from the perspective of one smart, vulnerable, confused, passionate young woman. ( )

Conversations with Friends is set in Dublin and revolves around the experiences of twenty-one year-old student Frances. The protagonist is a spoken word performer who works and still spends a lot of time with her ex-girlfriend and now best friend Bobbi. Melissa is a photographer in her mid to late thirties and starts to work on a profile of Frances and Bobbi. She attends their performances, invites them to her home and eventually invites the couple to a vacation home in France. Melissa is married to Nick, an actor. Right from the beginning there seems to be chemistry between Melissa and Bobbi and Frances is reluctant to visit Melissa's and Nick's house. Soon Nick and Frances get closer and share a kiss. What will happen after that kiss? How will Nick and Frances deal with that? What about Melissa and Bobbi? Read the novel to find out more.

This novel is not about a fast-paced plot and driving the story further. It is rather a character study of Frances, who faces several problems in her life and is very self-conscious about herself. She does not come from an affluent background and faces student debt. She sometimes does not know how to pay for food. Her parents are divorced, her father is an alcoholic. Her mother cares about her, but Frances is not that open with her mom. Frances starts to have serious health issues. Add to that the relationship with Nick, who is not only eleven years older than her but also married. "What is a friend?" and "What is a conversation?" are two central questions that Frances or rather the novel asks. As a reader you will most likely not find those questions answered in the novel, but the way it makes you ponder the meaning of those two concepts - friendship and conversation - is well worth the ride and may lead to your own individual answers.

I enjoyed reading Conversations with Friends a lot because of the way the characters interact and the complications that arise and are never fully resolved. I can see why it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me the novel worked quite well. 4 stars. ( )

I came to Conversations with Friends after falling for Normal People. It's hard not to compare the two novels given their similar style, focus, and flow. Unfortunately, the comparison does not benefit Conversations with Friends. If you are going to read one of Rooney's books, stick with Normal People.

Once you get over Rooney's staggered timelines and lack of quotation marks, it is easy to sink into the book's cadence. Rooney captures the quintessential millennial mix of ambivalence and superiority, and that confusing but exciting period in your early twenties, full of discovery, self-doubt, and self-creation.

I was curious to see how things would unravel for the characters, but if I had lost the book halfway through reading, I probably wouldn’t have worked hard to seek a replacement. I lacked compassion and empathy for Bobbi and Frances, who I found frustrating and forced. They seemed to be sitting upon the edge of believability. I could almost picture a world in which they existed, but then a scene or line would shatter the image.

Rooney writes exclusively about flawed individuals; I can't think of a single self-actualized character in either of her books. Even minor characters are detailed enough to demonstrate their follies. Maybe we are all a little flawed— and perhaps that's why so many people are drawn to her books— but these particular flaws just didn't click with me. I would love to see Rooney's attempt at writing a strong and admirable human being. ( )
