A sharply intelligent novel about friendship, lust, jealousy, and the unexpected complications of adulthood in the 21st century. Frances is a cool-headed and darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. Her best friend and comrade-in-arms is the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi. At a local poetry performance one night, Frances and Bobbi catch the eye of Melissa, a well-known photographer, and as the girls are then gradually drawn into Melissa's world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman's sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband, Nick. However amusing and ironic Frances and Nick¿s flirtation seems at first, it gives way to a strange intimacy, and Frances¿s friendship with Bobbi begins to fracture. As Frances tries to keep her life in check, her relationships increasingly resist her control: with Nick, with her difficult and unhappy father, and finally, terribly, with Bobbi. Desperate to reconcile her inner life to the desires and vulnerabilities of her body, Frances's intellectual certainties begin to yield to something new: a painful and disorienting way of living from moment to moment. Written with gem-like precision and marked by a sly sense of humor, Conversations with Friends is wonderfully alive to the pleasures and dangers of youth, and the messy edges of female friendship… (més)

I don’t get the Rooney love at all, but I’ve tried. ( )

I wouldn't want to have a conversation with any of the characters in this book, not one. A world where money just appears and classes are just something you go to at your convenience. ( )

Sally Rooney's debut novel tells of college friends, & former lovers, Frances & Bobbi who meet the slightly older artistic married couple Melissa & Nick. That age difference becomes important in numerous ways. Bobbi is self-assured, charming yet abrasive in the way of the young & highly idealistic (I speak from my experience as an idealist abrasive 20 something). Nick & Melissa are both a bit jaded & can be unpleasant to be around (I speak from experience as a somewhat jaded person slightly older than the two of them). Our narrator, Frances, is unsure of herself, she can be timid & is afraid to tell people what she really feels & wants. This leads to frustration & confusion in her relationships with others as her assumptions are often proven to be incorrect. Frances' affair with Nick is wonderfully nuanced as there's no clear guilty party/victim in the book. Sally Rooney has produced something of a miracle, & that is to write a book about the anxieties of Millennials, that feels timeless for its concerns. I'm of Gen X, but I saw so much of myself & my friends in these characters. I loved this book so much. ( )

Rooney's characters are witty, intellectual and anything but normal. ( )

Frances and her best friend, and one-time lover, Bobbi, talk gender & politics & act cool. Then Frances falls into a relationship with a passive married man.

Sally Rooney understands how people think, and how their aspirations are sometimes a big stretch away from messy everyday life in which we don’t quite understand exactly why we do stuff and the effect our actions have on others. A fascinating read about contemporary life, where none of the characters are either heroines or cunning baddies, but ordinary human beings, stumbling along through life, misunderstanding others & themselves.
