A sharply intelligent novel about friendship, lust, jealousy, and the unexpected complications of adulthood in the 21st century Frances is a cool-headed and darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. Her best friend and comrade-in-arms is the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi. At a local poetry performance one night, Frances and Bobbi catch the eye of Melissa, a well-known photographer, and as the girls are then gradually drawn into Melissa's world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman's sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband, Nick. However amusing and ironic Frances and Nick's flirtation seems at first, it gives way to a strange intimacy, and Frances's friendship with Bobbi begins to fracture. As Frances tries to keep her life in check, her relationships increasingly resist her control: with Nick, with her difficult and unhappy father, and finally, terribly, with Bobbi.   Desperate to reconcile her inner life to the desires and vulnerabilities of her body, Frances's intellectual certainties begin to yield to something new: a painful and disorienting way of living from moment to moment. Written with gem-like precision and marked by a sly sense of humor, Conversations with Friends is wonderfully alive to the pleasures and dangers of youth, and the messy edges of female friendship. Sally Rooney provides a story with complex relationships and a unique storytelling style. I found her writing to sometimes be abrupt, but she always managed to capture my attention suddenly with a turn of phrase or plot. In order to enjoy this book you need to be okay with or like the 'miscommunication' trope. I tend to find that trope frustrating, but I still enjoyed this book and I will probably in the future pick up another book by Rooney.

Frances, a quiet disconnected young woman is our narrator. Her and her best friend/ex-girlfriend Bobbi become friends with a married couple. This provides fodder for several complicated relationships which has the reader reliving confusing emotions and communication blunders.

This is not a book I would recommend lightly - it would be good for readers who enjoy angsty drama, miscommunication blunders, and complicated relationships. ( )

I love Sally Rooney because she is so good at describing the rich interior lives of those of us who are utterly miserable ( )

Glad I decided to give Sally Rooney another chance. I was lukewarm on Normal People, but really enjoyed this book. I read the first half in one evening. I don't think I've ever read a book that made love and adultery feel so morally ambiguous. Well done. ( )

I enjoyed the dynamics of the characters in this book. While none are loveable, I found them to be interesting and layered. ( )

Insufferably dreary, self-indulgent claptrap. ( )
