Page covers the early days of cricket in Tasmania, including the ground breaking match where Shiney, a Tasmanian Aboriginal, became the first known Aboriginal to play in a cricket match. Tours by mainland colonies and English touring teams of the nineteenth centuries get a lot of coverage and there are some good pen portraits of leading Tasmanian cricketers over the years, from Kenneth Burn and Charles Eady to Ted McDonald and Laurie Nash. Obviously Burn's bizarre Ashes selection is covered as is Dodd's missing an afternoon of a major match to attend the horse racing.
There is some interesting information but sadly it's not brought to life enough; which is probably due to the style of cricket writing in the 1950s than the fault of Mr Page. ( )
