"In the 1990s, "alternative" was suddenly mainstream, and bands like Pearl Jam and Pavement, Nirvana and R.E.M.--bands that a year before would have been too weird for MTV--were MTV. The boundaries of American culture were exploding, and music was leading the way. It was also the 1990s when a shy music geek named Rob Sheffield met a hell-raising Appalachian punk-rock girl named Renée, who was way too cool for him but fell in love with him anyway. He was tall. She was short. He was shy. She was a social butterfly. They had nothing in common except that they both loved music. Music brought them together and kept them together. And it was music that would help Rob through a sudden, unfathomable loss. Here, Rob, now a writer for Rolling Stone, uses the songs on fifteen mix tapes to tell the story of his brief time with Renée.--From publisher description."--From source other than the Library of Congress… (més)

This book wasn't really my cup of tea, but I gave it to a friend and she loved it! ( )

I listened to this as an audio book and loved it. The emotional component of the plot was much stronger and more intimate because Sheffield read the story, allowing the reader to hear his joy and grief while reminiscing about his late wife. It's a sad story but also one of hope and full of humor. I laughed out loud quite a bit; Sheffield is a talented writer and storyteller. My only complaint is a few chapters that dragged slightly and didn't seem to fit into the overall story (like the anecdotes about religious camp). But it was a fabulous book and I'm thrilled this was my foray into audio books. ( )

A heartbreaking love letter to Sheffield's dead wife. Lovely and moving, even though most of the music references went over my head. ( )

Absolutely heartbreaking! It made me pull out my tiny collection of mixtapes and fly back in time, tears still in my eyes. Tops. ( )

This is a seriously heart breaking yet a phenomenal pick me up read. I've re-read it several times and I love it. ( )
