"The essential universe, from our most celebrated and beloved astrophysicist. What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There's no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson. But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in tasty chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day. While you wait for your morning coffee to brew, for the bus, the train, or a plane to arrive, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry will reveal just what you need to be fluent and ready for the next cosmic headlines: from the Big Bang to black holes, from quarks to quantum mechanics, and from the search for planets to the search for life in the universe"--… (més)

themulhern: Both have a lightish treatment of similar topics. I think "We Have no Idea" has more verve, though.

Great book on the Cosmos.. gets a little deep in the physics but has a great ending which really gets you thinking about the universe and where we fit into it.. ( )

"The cosmic perspective" is indeed for everyone and Tyson delivers an amazing, educational, entertaining, and moving crash course in Astrophysics perfect for the hurried and non-hurried among us. The unassuming tiny tome offers fascinating data and clear and concise explanations that are not at all intimidating. The author even makes an excellent case for why it is so important for everyone to have an understanding of the cosmos.

"People who believe they are ignorant of nothing have neither looked for, nor stumbled upon, the boundary between what is known and unknown in the universe." p 33

"Now imagine a world in which everyone, but especially people with power and influence, holds an expanded view of our place in the cosmos. With that perspective, our problems would shrink-- or never arise at all-- and we could celebrate our earthly differences while shunning the behavior of our predecessors who slaughtered one another because of them." p 197

"In other words, after the laws of physics, everything else is opinion." p 45

"Because light takes time to reach us from distant places in the universe, if we look out in deep space we actually see eons back in time. So if the intelligent inhabitants of a galaxy far, far away were to measure the temperature of the cosmic background radiation at the moment captured by our gaze, they should get a reading higher than 2.7 degrees, because they are living in a younger, smaller, hotter universe than we are." p 56

"[C]osmic dark matter has about six times the total gravity of all visible matter." p 82

"What we know is that the matter we have come to love in the universe-- the stuff of stars, planets, and life-- is only a light frosting on the cosmic cake, modest buoys afloat in a vast cosmic ocean of something that looks like nothing." p 85

"Looking more closely at Earth's atmospheric fingerprints, human biomarkers will also include sulfuric, carbonic, and nitric acids, and other components of smog from the burning of fossil fuels. If the curious aliens happen to be socially, culturally, and technologically more advanced than we are, then they will surely interpret these biomarkers as convincing evidence for the absence of intelligent life on Earth." p 192

"We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out-- and we have only just begun." p 33

An einer Stelle sagt er "In other words, after the laws of physics, everything else is opinion." Das erinnert doch schwer an das Zitat von Rutherford "All science is either physics or stamp collecting." Und an anderer Stelle wirft er einem Psychologieprofessor vor "His ego was unjustifiably big to begin with, inflated by delusions of significance", weil dieser untersuchen wollte, inwieweit eine Kosmo-Show Menschen sich klein und unbedeutend fühlen lässt.

Später mehr - hier ist gerade Gewitter ( )

In the beginning of this book there is a quote that says "The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you." That is certainly true because although I did enjoy parts of this book, I don't have enough physics background to understand most of the book. ( )

DNF at 50%. It just didn't hold my attention. I loved Tyson's series Cosmo, but this book just wasn't as interesting. ( )
