De sista tvåhundra sidorna var väl bra,men herregud vad boken degade sig fram innan dess! Inte direkt dålig, men inte medryckande. Hade mått bra av att vara 150 sidor kortare. Minst. This was just not my cup of tea. I wanted to learn more about the Culture and since the main character worked for their enemy there was not too much details about their side. I suppose I will try other books in the series to read about the world building. There was a lot of action in this book. If you like to read about a lot of battles and chases, this would be for you. Often it felt like the author threw in a lot of side missions that had nothing to do with the plot for the sake of writing a cool battle scene. Some people would love this, but I find it hard to focus on them. I also wanted a better feel for the characters in the book, they had a lot of potential, but I never got a feel for most of them as individuals and kept forgetting who was who among the crew of the ship. Overall, if you like lots of action and adventure and enjoy a good battle scene give this a try. If not, give this one a pass. I will continue with the next book in the series because there is a lot of potential in the world building that I want to see if it is realized later in the series. brill. There are reasons why I have left certain books on the NPR Reader's Choice Sci-fi/Fantasy list to the very end (ok, last twenty-five). When I began reading this one, I was actually surprised at how fast-paced and interesting it was after all. Then, about two hundred pages in, I fell out of like with it. Maybe it was the repercussions of the horrifying encounter with the Eaters, or maybe I just lost interest. I skimmed through the rest of the book to see if it might rekindle my initial interest, but to no avail. I will probably not be continuing this series anytime soon.
The choice of name was definitely not an attempt to gain literary credentials or he would have ditched the ‘camp aliens and laser blasters.’ He has acknowledged the similarities to the poem in that the main character in Consider Phlebas is drowning and later undergoes a ’sea-change’ – this being a motif running through The Waste Land – but that is far as it goes. But there are a number of parallels between the two works, whether deliberate or not on Iain’s part. To prove my point I will take a brief look at Consider Phlebas and then at The Waste Land, followed by examples of how the latter informs the former.
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction. Consider Phlebas - a space opera of stunning power and awesome imagination. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

Horza infiltrates a cargo ship filled with mercenaries who end up being perfect candidates for the shape changer to basically trick them into helping him out.
I’ve read Consider Phlebas a few times over the years and it definitely holds up well. Too bad the streaming series fell through, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying this classic. The audio version is well done. It you enjoyed science fiction biggies like Hyperion and A Fire Upon the Deep, you would enjoy Consider Phlebas. (
