On one hand, I hate how STRESSFUL this series is. No one can be happy here. The realities and atrocities of war are here and constant. A particular double woman-child sacrifice was tough to read, but it showed how some people will do anything for power and the all-consuming nature of unstoppable violence. Some of the characters are even forced to seek help from foes or other vile humans.

And yet I can’t put this series down. I have come to enjoy these characters (Harper, Helene, Elias, etc) a lot though Laia can be irrational, often. But her heart is in the right place though she is boring. I want more of Darin now that he FINALLY got his junk together. While Elias was seriously slacking at his job for 3/4s of the book, his new struggle with humanity and stoicness has my interest.

These novels are thick, but each one has been an easy reading experience. This dark, violent, and tragic mess of a story is enthralling. Everything's not perfect, but I want to read more.

3 or 4 stars ( )

What can I say about the book that made me stay awake all night because I couldn’t imagine sleeping without knowing what was gonna happen next in the story.

While I assumed that this third book would be much more bleak and hopeless, and there were many dark things that happened, it was also a very interesting book to read and I enjoyed the history of the world so much. We also get to see so much more of the empire as well as the surrounding kingdoms, and it was great to visit all these new places. There is also a lot more political intrigue in this one than I expected along with action, and this was a perfect balance by the author.

I think I can finally say that I’m a total Helene Acquilla fangirl. She may not always be a great strategist, especially when it comes to handling the cunning Commandant; but she is the most loyal person I’ve met in this whole series and her love for her people and her sister was even more pronounced in this book. She definitely is prejudiced towards the Scholars but I can see that changing slowly and I hope she becomes even more formidable in the final book. I also like her bond with Harper and the way he is always protecting her is very admirable. I’ve also really come to like Dex, Faris and Livia a lot and I can’t wait to see much more of them.

Laia and Elias are both trying their best to do their duties and their paths went in directions I did not see coming. They are both their formidable selves but I can see them both individually becoming forces to reckon with in the finale and I hope they can find their way towards each other again.

To conclude, this was an excellent third book and now I realize how much of a wait everyone else must have felt when the books were releasing. I’m lucky I got to binge read the three but now I’m gonna join all the fans in the wait for he finale which I know will be explosive. I’m just scared because Sabaa has promised there will be lots of tears and heartbreak and I don’t know how I’ll ever be ready for that. Let’s wait and watch. ( )

Laia and Darin are reunited, Elias has become a Soul Catcher in training (freeing ghosts from the Waiting Place to where they should rest eternally), and Helene is fully the Blood Shrike now trying her best to protect her sister and take down the Commandant. The Nightbringer continues his plans to free the jinn, and Laia and her friends are determined to stop him - but can they? Or is this meant to be?

If you've read the previous books in the series, you know to expect fast-paced and high-stakes action, and three narrators - Laia, Elias, and the Blood Shrike - giving you the full picture of what's happening in the Empire. Just about every chapter, including the final one, ends on a cliffhanger. Thankfully book 4 is already out, so I don't have to wait long to finally getting (what I hope will be) a satisfying ending. It took me a long time to find the rhythm in this book, which is partially the result of insufficient editing. The three main characters (Helena/Blood Shrike, Laia, and Elias/Soul Catcher) seem to drift away from each other, both physically and emotionally, which really was one of the strengths of this series. Tahir's use of dreams and magic to create artificial interaction seemed forced, and I agree with sentiments of one sage reviewer, who observed that the voices of the main characters became indistinct. I did like some of the reveals towards the end. ( )
