"Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He's finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he's a great jumper, so he's not scared at all. "Looks easy," says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can't help but root for"--Amazon.com.… (més)

diverse picture book (bravery, swimming; older preschoolers/kinder ages 3? and up)
* prominently features diverse characters: Jabari (braver than he thinks!) his dad and sister, and a diverse crowd of other pool-goers.
* would work for preschooler storytime (if they can sit through longer stories), or grades K-2. This is a longer, more serious story (no rhyming or cartoony gimmicks) that shows Jabari first doubting, then conquering his fear of the diving board at the public pool. Younger kids who can sit through a longer, quieter story will enjoy it (there are still a lot of sweet and funny moments they can identify with and the pacing of the text is perfect for a more serious but not too serious story), but I think older kids who are tackling fears of their own would appreciate it on a higher level. This book would be appropriate for primary grade levels. In this book Jabari and his family go to the swimming pool. Jabari arrives all geared up to jump off the high diving board. Once he gets to the steps however, a great feeling of hesitation sweeps over him. Through some extra time, deep breathes, and lots of encouragement and patience from his father he finally leaps off the board.
This book is so cute and has beautiful illustrations. This would be a great fit for lessons on bravery, families, or just for beginning readers. Due to the unique illustrations it could also be used for an arts lessons. ( )

Excellent book for beginners readers. Jabari is a little boy who is going to the pool and is going to jump off the diving board for the very first time. He works up the courage to do it. :) ( )

An inspiring story about believing in yourself and trying new things. ( )

I loved this book. I thought it was very powerful. What I took away was him facing his fears and having the courage to do something new. He took swimming lessons and passed the test and so he knew he could do it but it was the height of the diving board that got him all nervous and freaked out. He watched the other kids and thought if they could do it so could he.
