I feel that there are little lessons in American values in White's children's books.

A boy named Applegate Skinner stood up.
"Mr. Brickle," he said, "what about me? I don't care for birds. I never liked birds."
"O.K., Applegate," said Mr. Brickle. "You don't have to like birds. If that is the way you feel about it, just go ahead not-liking birds. Everyone is entitled to his likes and dislikes and to his prejudices. Come to think of it, I don't care for pistachio ice cream. I don't know why I don't like it, but I don't. Do not forget, however, that Louis is one of your counselors. Whether you like him or not, he must be treated with respect."

...later Louis saves Skinner from drowning.

Applegate thought hard for a moment. "Well," he said, "I'm grateful to Louis for saving my life. But I still don't like birds."
"Really?" said Mr. Brickle. "That's quite remarkable. Even though a bird saved you from drowning, you don't care for birds? What have you got against birds?"
"Nothing," replied Applegate. "I have nothing against them. I just don't care for them."
"Really?" said Mr. Brickle. "I guess we'll just have to leave it at that. But the camp is proud of Louis. He is our most distinguished counselor--a great trumpet player, a great bird, a powerful swimmer, and a fine friend. He deserves a medal. In fact, I intend to write a letter recommending that he be given a Lifesaving medal." ( )

This book requires suspension of belief, and that is what children crave when reading magical scenarios .

Sam Beaver is eleven. Each year he and his father spend time camping in the deep woods of Maine. They fish, hike and enjoy time together.

Sam took a walk without his father, and he discovered the sheer joy of observing the habits of a male white swan, and his mate. He watched as a next was meticulously made while the father of the upcoming birth of the signets, swam back and forth, back and forth in an endeavor to protect his family.

Five tiny beautiful signets poked their heads out of their mother's feathers. One could not talk and could not make the usual sounds that echoed over the water and woods.

As Sam observed, he noted a fox attempting to kill the mother. He threw things at the fox and the mother survived.

Louis , who cold not talk, soon was a favorite of Sam. Providing a small chalk board and chalk that were around his neck. His distraught father knew the sounds that swan's make sounded like a trumpet. He flew through the glass of the music store and made away with a beautiful trumpet.

Finding his way inn the world Louis, went to school with Sam, played the trumpet in clubs where his notes mesmerized all.

Soon, Louis fell in love with another female swan.

The life of Louis was full and rich. He made enough money to repay the owner of the store for the damages and the trumpet.

While this may be a boring story for adults, it is perfect for small children.

I enjoyed the beauty of E.B. White's writing.

With kids, for school. Loved it. The language is lovely. ( )

(Full disclosure: I am an adult who usually reads middle-grade to teen fiction, most of which I thoroughly enjoy. I probably would have enjoyed this book MUCH more when I was 8 or 10 years old, but its story doesn't hold up well for an adult reader.)
Louis is a baby trumpeter swan who has no voice. Fortunately, he is fluent in the English language, learns to write, using a small slate and piece of chalk, and to play the trumpet beautifully, which gives him a voice. He gets jobs, for which he is paid, and he negotiates things with people. In the end, he convinces the love of his life to love him back and he lives happily ever after.
E. B. White wrote three well known children's books. "Charlotte's Web" of course, is brilliant. One of the keys to making that book work so well, is that although the humans talked to each other, and the animals talked to each other, there was no communication between humans and animals other than Charlotte's writing on the web. Somehow, that worked beautifully, making one of the all time classic children's novels. Then there was "Stuart Little" which was absolutely abysmal. I can't imagine why anyone considers it a classic, other than by association with "Charlotte's Web." This book hung in between those other two. It's nowhere near as good as "Charlotte's Web," but it also doesn't make you want to shred it and throw it in the fireplace the way "Stuart Little" did (for me anyway). ( )
