So I think my problem is that I don't like hate to love, enemies to lovers or bully romances. ( )

The premise was promising but unfortunately, I was skipping the majority of the book just for the ending. I hated the main characters, Misha was an absolute ass and while Ryen was no better, I could understand her a little more. Misha just treated her like absolute crap.
I hate bully romances and was disappointed this was one.
The best character was Annie, who appeared at the start and was only mentioned throughout the book.
I also really struggled to get into the book, it was kinda boring.
The smut, I definitely skipped because of the details.
Also, this book is just so problematic in so many ways ( )

- é muito bom, tem muitas reviravoltas e envolve muitos personagens
- leitura bastante fluida e prende muito o leitor mas achei longo um pouco ( )

*edit* I realize this book wasn't as good as as my other 5 star reads so I'm changing it to 4. Still love this book, just love my other Pen reads better.

I LOVED IT! This was the first book of Pen's I actually bought a physical copy of and I'm not mad at all. The whole idea was so brilliant. Ryen and Misha are both unique and different characters. Ryen is less open about who she really is and Misha isn't afraid for everyone to see. But let me talk about the steam I felt with these characters being close to each other. It was so clear that there was an attraction all the time they were near each other. The smut was AWESOME. Vandalizing might be one of my favorite fictional couple activities now lol. A-MAZING 4 stars!!! ( )

For the first 40% of this book, I really had absolutely no idea about what I was going to rate this book. I didn't hate it or anything but I also wasn't loving it. However, the last half was just so much better to me than the first half, which bumped this up to 4 stars for me.

A lot of people describe this as a book as a darker romance. You really aren't supposed to love Ryen right away. She's a mean person and her friends are awful as well. She is the bully that you see in other romance novels. To compare this to a different dark romance that I read this year, [b:Code of Silence|48107416|Code of Silence|Shantel Tessier|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578101328l/48107416._SY75_.jpg|73324993], I actually liked this book because even though there is some dislike and tension between Ryen and Misha at the beginning of the book, you can can tell, especially in later parts, that they actual care for each other and respect each other which was something totally missing from Code of Silence. I liked that Ryen and Misha weren't really good for each other right away because it meant we got to see them work at a relationship, even if it was messy.

The background characters and their stories were good as well and really helped to set the scene. I always struggle a little bit with books set in high school where truly insane things happen. I'm not long out of high school and even though I was pretty boring in high school, I do know the things that high schoolers do and what makes sense for high schools to be doing, even if it seems stupid, and what is unrealistic. I think this book did a good job of creating good conflict within a high school and accurately portraying high school without being unrealistic about the sort of things most high schoolers do.

I know some people describe this book as erotica or smut which I don't think is accurate. Yes there are steamier sex scenes in this book. Most romances have sex scenes, even when set in high school. That's part of the reason a lot of high school romances are set during senior year, when a lot of the students will be 18. However, just having edgier or steamier sex scenes does not make a book erotica. Erotica is when a book is almost entirely centered around sex. I read and enjoy some erotica but this was absolutely a romance and the sex scenes in this book were used as a way to further the plot and the relationship between our two main characters.

Without spoiling anything, I could have done without the epilogue. I liked the idea of having a little more ambiguity at the end of this book, especially since it is a high school romance and a lot can change after high school. I'm sure a lot of people will like this ending, I just wanted and was expecting something a little different.

I had seen a lot of recommendations for this book and I'm super glad this wasn't a disappointment for me. If I had liked the first third of the book a little more and the ending was a little different, I probably would have given this 5 stars. I can totally understand why so many people have this as one of their favorite romances. I would recommend this if you want a high school romance that is a bit steamier.

Misha

I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…

And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F*ck it. I need to meet her.

I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should've gotten his number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.
