A pompous developer plans to turn the new spirit portal into an amusement park, potentially severing an already tumultuous connection with the spirits. What's more, the triads have realigned and are in a brutal all-out brawl at the city's borders - where hundreds of evacuees have relocated! In order to get through it all, Korra and Asami vow to look out for each other - but first, they've got to get better at being a team and a couple!… (més)

This comic directly continues the story told in the animated series it is based on, and I think it is a very strong successor. ( )

"Alright enough fucking around with subtext Korra and Asami are going to be a couple and they are going to be kissing and it is going to be very explicitly gay." ( )

Oh my word, this was such a fun romp.

So much queerness. So many characters I had no idea I missed so much!

Fitting that I should read a comic featuring Korra and Asami, whose in-canon romance was revealed on this day 3 years ago.
I wanted to talk about the representation in this comic but like I feel like I'll just start GUSHING. Positive female characters. Queer love, queer acceptance, women empowering other women. Women in positions of real, true leadership. Women engineers.

And all this positive representation followed through with excellent, loveable, well-formed characters and a compelling plot.

From a children's show. That's not supposed to be a snide remark. That's supposed to be a 'look what people can create that is queer-positive, feminist and accessible to children'.

I'm so proud of this whole creative team and I really love Irene Koh's artwork. Her art just has a lot of movement and strength, which you need in a comic about people who can bend elements with their chi. If you have time, check out Irene's Twitch channel! https://www.twitch.tv/kohquette

I sat in on a stream of hers and learnt so much -- she's very generous with her time and her artwork and I'm just super happy that someone like Irene Koh does the artwork for this series, because I know she loves Korra.

I'm so ready for volume two. D: ( )

So, I actually cried when Korra and Asami kissed. Like, tears streaming down my face. This is the continuation of their story that my little gay heart needed after the animated series ended.

Although everyone reacted really well to finding out that Korra and Asami are a couple now, I just wish that there wasn't the possibility that people could be homophobic in this universe. Why can't it be a non-issue? It seems like it's being foreshadowed that the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation are still prejudiced against same-sex relationships. I guess it makes sense because Korra and Asami are the first same-sex couple we've encountered so it has never come up before, but ugh. I just want my girls to be together and for their relationship to be as uncomplicated as possible by external factors like prejudice and homophobia. We have enough of that in the real world. ( )

If you loved the final scene of The Legend of Korra series, you'll love this book. It expands on Korra and Asami's new relationship, and touches on the differences between each nation's LGBTQ acceptance level. It treats the subject with respect, and I'm sure LGBTQ kids and teens will be thrilled to see themselves in the pages.

As far as the Turf Wars part of the plot, it seems a bit like a retread from the animated series. They have a successful formula and they're sticking to it, I suppose. They always find a way to expand on a modern world problem, it looks like this season's will be the commercialization of absolutely everything, and I'm not going to complain about that. A pithier title might have been The Legend of Korra: This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things.

Looking forward to the next book. ( )
