Central items in this collection are one early seascape painting, three drawings, and more than 100 prints by Whistler donated to the museum in 1936 by Margaret Watson Parker, a Detroit art collector and patron of the museum. Stewart's introductory essay is a fascinating account of Whistler's personal connection to Detroit, his friendship with Detroit art collector Charles Lang Freer (founder and benefactor of the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, DC) and the friendship that developed in the early 1900s between the two fellow Detroit collectors of Whistler's art. An appendix provides a complete illustrated checklist of the museum's 102 holdings of Whistler's works on paper. Helpful to reading the catalog entries are references to other paintings not illustrated but reproduced in David Park Curry's James NcNeill Whistler at the Freer Gallery of Art (CH, Nov'84). This fine catalog, illuminating Whistler's works in etching and lithography, would enhance art collections at all levels.… (més)
