Based on some of literature's horror and science fiction classics, this "tour de force of reclaiming the narrative, executed with impressive wit and insight" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) debut is the story of a remarkable group of women who come together to solve the mystery of a series of gruesome murders--and the bigger mystery of their own origins. Mary Jekyll, alone and penniless following her parents' death, is curious about the secrets of her father's mysterious past. One clue in particular hints that Edward Hyde, her father's former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is a reward for information leading to his capture...a reward that would solve all of her immediate financial woes. But her hunt leads her to Hyde's daughter, Diana, a feral child left to be raised by nuns. With the assistance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Mary continues her search for the elusive Hyde, and soon befriends more women, all of whom have been created through terrifying experimentation: Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherin Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein. When their investigations lead them to the discovery of a secret society of immoral and power-crazed scientists, the horrors of their past return. Now it is up to the monsters to finally triumph over the monstrous.… (més)

Trope-heavy but overall enjoyable read. I quite enjoyed Justine's extended story.

Unfortunately I found the dialogue interjections a bit irritating and bathos-creating. I think the book would have been stronger and more tense without them. ( )

I tried. I really tried on this one, because it literally has everything I love. The monsters of classic literature. Sherlock. I mean, short of layering in a touch of Lovecraft, this is a damn near perfect scenario for me.

But goddammit, Theodora, you had to ruin it by making the authorial decision to continually stop all forward motion and yank us out of the story to let some of the main players constantly bitch about something in the narrative. I thought I could get past it. I thought—hoped, really—that you would slow it down a touch once we got into the story proper.

But then you went to Diana Hyde's story, and once again, immediately yank us out to have Diana bitch about having to write her own section. Sigh.

No. Just...fucking...no. Any time you built up some dramatic tension, you promptly kicked it right in the balls with this narrative device that, at least up to the point I read, added literally nothing to the story, except frustration on the readers' part.

And the thought of having to wade through not only the rest of this novel, but two more putting up with that kind of horseshit? Nope.

I'm out.

I did have some issues with the style of writing - random interjections in the middle of the narrative - but overall I enjoyed this book a lot. Going to move on to the sequel. ( )

A fun amalgamation of literature’s well-known scientists and monsters!

Mary Jekyll is left nearly destitute after her mother’s death, but a surprising discovery in her mother’s records gives her hope of tracking down the wanted murderer, Edward Hyde, and the reward money that comes with his capture. What she finds instead is Hyde’s daughter, Diana, and a sinister mystery begins to unfold. With the assistance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Mary sets out to find the truth about the secret society of alchemists her father was a part of, and the other girls they experimented on: Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherine Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein.

It’s a very entertaining book about women coming together, accepting their differences and supporting one another. It combines characters and references to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Rappaccini’s Daughter, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Frankenstein, and a little bit of Dracula, which plays a bigger role in the second book of the trilogy. Inventive, a club of girls and young women who were either daughters of mad 18th Century scientists or their reanimated creations. Sherlock Holmes works with them to solve some murders. They are quite good company but doesn’t have the shocking vitality of Goss’s Snow White Scorcery poems and short stories. Has a bit of a Girls Own Adventures feel to it - probably not worth reading the sequels. ( )
