Elderly Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo, famous for having been married to seven different men, gives an unknown junior reporter the scoop of a lifetime as she dishes all the dirt about her career, her husbands, and the secret love of her life.

I am not someone remotely beguiled by Hollywood glamour or interested in the soapy personal lives of stars, and, indeed, I find celebrity culture actively off-putting. So the whole premise of this novel seems like it should be very, very much Not My Thing. But I loved Taylor Jenkins Reid's Daisy Jones and the Six (which was also sort of about celebrity culture, I guess, but was about music, which is a bit more interesting to me), and everyone seemed to be gushing about this, so I decided to give it a shot. And, what do you know, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not even entirely sure why. Objectively, I can name a number of things about it that probably shouldn't have worked. For instance, the reason why Hugo has chosen this particular reporter feels both hugely contrived and, after a certain point, blindingly obvious. And the voice of the reporter herself never felt especially interesting or believable. But did I care? I did not. Because I found the story of Evelyn Hugo's life strangely compelling, and that kept me happily turning pages.

In fact, I read most of this one on an airplane, and it felt just about perfect for that, making the miles fly by metaphorically as well as literally. ( )

It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.

Throughout reading the book, I was having a hard time figuring out what I would rate it. But in the end, after really reading it, I realized how captivating this story is. It lures you in and leaves you wanting more. Every time I put the book down I found myself wanting to read it for a few more minutes.

I haven't truly read or completed a book in months. I would read a few chapters before stopping or I would force myself to continue reading for my benefit. Reading this story changed that. I don't know if it's because I was on Christmas break and just had time, or the story just felt so real and alluring.

It is a story of morality and becoming. It is a story of acceptance but also rejection. It is a story of love and hardships. It is a story of fame and power. It is what a story should be.

I found myself getting lost in the pages and truly feeling a part of the story. I read to get lost in another world, and this book really did that for me. I think that is so important and valuable.

This book shows the hardships of being in a same-sex relationship during a time when it wasn't acceptable. It shows the lengths one will go to in order to protect the ones they love–even if that means marrying seven times. Evelyn and Celia's love was very raw and real. Evelyn did things in order to protect Celia and their relationship, in order to divert the public's gaze and judgment. But Celia didn't see that part. She saw the woman she loves marrying men while she should be with her. Of course, she knew the dangers of being seen with Evelyn, but she loved her so deeply that she was truly ready to give up her fame and spend her life with the person she loves.

The story deals with beautiful relationships while also focusing on how hard those relationships can be. Whether that be abuse, not truly loving the person you're with, or having to hide your relationship from the public in order to keep your career.

It is a beautiful story that I think everyone should read. ( )
