Intriguing, well written, easy read Evelyn Hugo is willing to disclose the many secrets of her long career full of scandals and highly- publicized heartbreaks. However, she will only discuss her life with one author; Monique, a relatively- inexperienced journalist. Why Monique? How can the story of Evelyn Hugo’s scandalous only be told through one underqualified journalist? The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a historic fiction that breaks many glass ceilings and social expectations with its several successful women, inter-racial couplings, and sexualities. Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote such an immersive story the reader easily forgets to ask “Why Monique?” Due to Monique’s minimal character development and story line, it appears the question is intentionally forgotten. Taylor is very clear on the points of view and distinction between past and present. Good airplane book. Quick. A quick read. Well written, interesting story. Lots of attention paid to clothes and interiors, visuals. The style reminded me a bit of Judith Krantz, particularly The jewels of Tessa Kent. The narrative frame is a journalist interviewing an aging Hollywood superstar in the present time, but the bulk of the novel is dedicated to the rags-to riches story of the superstar from her humble beginnings in New York in the 50'es up until present time. Some attempt at adding layers with issues of identity both in the historical and the present time storyline - including issues of class, race and sexuality. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds, Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
