When best friends are not forever . . . Shannon and Adrienne have been best friends ever since they were little. But one day, Adrienne starts hanging out with Jen, the most popular girl in class and the leader of a circle of friends called The Group. Everyone in The Group wants to be Jen's #1, and some girls would do anything to stay on top . . . even if it means bullying others. Now every day is like a roller coaster for Shannon. Shannon Hale shares her life experiences through this graphic novel. She tells of how in school her best friend, Adrienne, starts to hang out with Jen. Jen just happens to be the most popular girl in school. Sometimes she was invited to be part of the group of popular kids, while other times she was not. Shannon's story of fitting in is not unique but it is helpful to those who read her story, the reader will find it relatable, they will learn to have empathy and to stand up for what is right.

Not for me, and I would have given 1 star, but for the afterword by Shannon Hale, explaining her reasons for telling the story. Reminded me of Smile, which I also disliked for some of the same reasons. Basically, this is a book about the mean girls, where you are in the popular group and put up with the shenanigans or you're not/don't. Shannon tried to fit in, but ultimately could not abide this behavior, but then she completely ignored a girl with similar ostracism, when they met behind a bush in the schoolyard. Run away. ( )

children's/middlegrade graphic memoir (friendship and "friendship" and mean girls in the 4-6th grades with incidents that touch on anxiety and mental health in kids and teens). Very relatable and readable childhood memoir in graphic/comic format that shows kids that they're not alone. Fans of Raina Telgemeier will gravitate towards the illustrations, and the experiences inside will ring true and keep them hooked. ( )

I know this graphic novel isn't completely true to life, but I'm pretty sure if I had known young Shannon Hale we would have been friends. I completely remember the awkwardness of going from a class with friends to a class with new people. I like how relatable this book is and how subtly Hale slips in things that gave her strength from her religion.

I would recommend this book to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Figuring out friends is always hard and this book helps show the reality of that. Luckily, it also gives some wisdom and some ideas on how to deal with friend problems.

I'm excited for the next book in this series and I hope that this saga continues all the way up to her courtship and marriage. That would be super cool to read about. ( )

This book is super cute. I loved the flashback to my own childhood. I may not have been in middle school during the 80s I still got the references. I remembered going through some of the same things that Shannon went through when trying to make friends. I also remember some of the issues that Wendy went through with trying to keep friends. I didn't grow up in a big family, but I related to what was going in with siblings. This is a great book for elementary students to read. It really shows all the different things going on in school and making friends. There is a great lesson about when to say NO also. I can't wait to read the next book. ( )
