"Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job no matter what the department throws at her."--… (més)

K. Ballard (she's on nights); pub and read 2018

I love Ballard. She's a realistic, strong, intelligent female lead. I will definitely be reading more of this series. The storyline kept my attention. The mystery and suspense came through perfectly. No one felt like a caricature. It was all real 3D, my kind of book. ( )

This crime novel from Michael Connelly has a new protagonist. The book is labeled "Harry Bosch Universe" but to make things clear, in this case it just means "Los Angeles", nothing else.

Renée Ballard is a police detective who works the late show, the night shift, at the Los Angeles Police Department. As the book starts, she is called in to handle an assault victim that was lucky to still live. As she is in a coma, detecting is not easy but Renée, in contrast to her partner, is determined to do her very best. It doesn't take long for everything to escalate though.

As background, Renée has been put on the night shift because she accused her boss of inappropriate behaviour, from which the boss was found not guilty. To say that she has a chip on her shoulder is to understate things.

I am not impressed by the book. To me it feels like Connelly cruised on idle when writing this. Too many stereotypes, too many coincidences, unnecessary scenes, and still the book is not a long one. It was ok, but not more than that. ( )

Not a good Michael Connelly book. It was boring. Too much detail step by step police work. It took away any excitement and suspense. Main character, Renee isn't likable, her dog is.

It's been 10 days since I started this book and I got to page 151. Averaging 15 pages a day that's how not into it I am of THE LATE SHOW.

I decided to skip and read the last 10 chapters. I'm glad I did. Phew....

Back to watching Bosch rerun..... ( )

So much about police procedures, it seemed like one of his first novels about a detective. Why did he feel the need to explain so much detail. Renee broke most rules about the correct procedure. It got so I disliked her for thinking she is above everyone else. True Renee solved all the cases in the story but couldn't she be a better cop within the rules. I understood her need to prove herself and that was her justification. Amazed she enjoyed surfing even after her father died doing it. Wonder if lifeguard will play more in the future. You know her grandmother and her unstable mother will be in more books. Glad there was not lots of sex even though she is single, yet each guy tries to put the moves on her. ( )
